Drizzle:  Thanks!  He was lucky.  the band was the matching one to the ering.  I do wish both the ering and the band were 3mm though.  I always feel as thin as they are it’s not enough protection.

Oh dear, I’m such a know-it-all geek in other areas, but I have lots of homework to do on this subject. I don’t know what over half of these things are! I am semi-patiently/ patiently/ impatiently waiting (rollercoaster waiting lol) & I would love for SO to propose, but I’ve given surprisingly little thought to the ring itself. I know very little about jewelry in general. I wear jewelry but it’s the sentimental attachment or because something looks ‘pretty’….no idea what knife cuts, princess cuts, solitaires, halos, moissanite etc are 🙁  All I know is that I’d prefer something simple and feminine looking, nothing too blingy or chunky.

Is there a website or a thread here on the Bee for learning all these various terms & styles.?

I think my e-ring tastes are pretty solidly stuck in the 1980s! I love yellow gold, Celtic knotwork, milgrain, and pear and marquise stone shapes. I’d prefer a .5-1.25 ct. center, moissanite. I love ruby as well.

I don’t prefer white metals, very small or very large centerstones, very thick or thin bands, halos, pave, (both can be lovely, but I am concerned about stones falling out), softer gemstones (concern of chipping/scratching), diamond prices, and very high settings.

Big emerald solitaires, 3 stone emerald cut rings, platinum e-ring, yellow gold plain 2mm wedding band, deep and lovely sapphire center stones, round brilliant solitaires, traditional and classic looks – sleek  – understated beauty with emphasis on quality.

Overly done honkers with all the bells and whistles, scrollwork, high settings, clusters, teeny solitaires, wraps that are trying too hard to compensate for a small stone, curved wedding bands to match e-ring, thick wedding bands, free form swooping bands, those black wedding bands and black erings with black stones lol goth i guess?

I would say – in my teens and 20’s i was always attracted to a round brilliant solitaire on platinum or yellow gold.

Now in my mid 30’s I’m so SO SO attracted to emerald cut solitaires.

I love what I have {sapphire princess ring}, and I wold have been horrified to receive:

a princess cut

a marquise

a quad/invisible set

Anything in thick gold

Any kind of cluster ring

If he had given me any kind of the abve it would have shown me he didn’t know me AT ALL.

Loving all the different likes and dislikes – for me,

Emerald cuts, cushion cuts, pear cuts; 3 stone, 5 stone settings; knife edge bands; delicate bands; tiny halos – I’m not sure what they’re called but like some of the tacori halos where the halo is almost part of the stone rather than set around the stone in a distinct halo…if that makes sense!

round and princess cuts; double halos; tension settings; bezel settings; thick bands; complicated settings – ones where there are literally diamonds everywhere with every sort of halo, double halo, split shank, diamonds all along the band etc; cluster rings

My bf has already purchased mine (I picked it out) -I’m just waiting for it now!  What I’ve learned is that we all have such different tastes and that is awesome!  I don’t see how a guy could ever guess what a girl would want without asking for input!

I would also say if possible, try to go together to try things on – there is no way to tell how something looks until you have it on your finger!!!  I thought I wanted a super blingy double halo and that ended up looking like “too much” to me on my finger.  We ended up going with a princess black rhodium halo setting with round white sapphire inside.  I love the black rhodium – gives more of a classic, subdued, vintage look.

Likes:  princess halo setting, pave, vintage and classic style settings, relatively thin band, wedding band with diamonds on it.

Dislike:  three stones, braided band, solitaire, pear shapes, yellow gold.

Things I Love

Thin bands, white gold, 3/4 eternity bands, solitaires, 3 stones, round, oval, cushion, emerald, elongated cushion, radiant, moissanite, diamond, white sapphire

Things I Dislike

Thick bands, yellow gold, marquis stones, any sort of clustering (as the main “stone” or as an accent), channel set stones, side stones that only go half way around the band, eternity bands, settings that are too high, halos, 6 prong settings, colored stones, butterflies or hearts anywhere, swirls that look like moustaches, artsy band designs that aren’t symmetrical, ascher, trillion, heart, pave settings that look like a row of shark teeth, porus stones like opal… I can go on and on.
