Hello, I have a little sister who is early teens and she was watching YouTube videos on my phone. I got the phone back and just quickly glanced at the screen and saw that she was viewing videos of what looked like goth/emo style videos dealing with hair/makeup. I was a little surprised because she is definitely not into that style and I casually asked her why she was watching them. She hmmed and hawed about it and finally told me that the girl in the video was skinny and that she wished she was that skinny as well.I had no idea how to respond to that because my sister is already very skinny. I just told her that she was beautiful and at a perfectly healthy weight.
I didn’t pay any more mind to it until I actually replayed one of the videos she watched and saw just how skinny the girl is. She looks skinny to the point that she either has a serious medical issue or eating disorder.
I am concerned about her and am not sure if I am blowing this out of proportion or not. I don’t have any other reason to believe that she may be developing body dismorphia other than her watching enough of these videos of the skinny girl to make it cover my front YouTube page and mentioning that she wishes that she was skinnier. I know she is also at that age where appearance is increadibly important. I feel conflicted about it because I don’t want to tell her that her perception of what is beautiful is wrong, but I also don’t want her to develop any eating disorder either. She is very private and rarely opens up to me or her mom and I don’t want to have a point of contention in our relationship over this if I am just overreacting.
