So figured I’d write up some of this before I forget the details, I’m not good at being concise so ah well it’s long. Going to break it up into 3 parts – before water breaks, after water breaks, and then hanging out in the hospital and coming home.
I had felt like I was in a weird stage of labor for weeks now. LT dropped at 34 weeks and I started having what felt like mild labor contractions, these were different than the braxton hicks contractions I started to have 2 weeks later. I’m still not sure why I had these but they felt like what my early labor contractions felt like and scared me for awhile that I was going to have her early (and then it turned into expecting her to arrive a few weeks early). But the painful contractions went away and I started just having BH contractions. They got more and more frequent as the weeks went on to the point where I felt like at night I was more likely to put my hand on my stomach during a BH than when it was relaxed. Monday morning at about 3 am I started having contractions I couldn’t sleep through, not all that painful but enough to make me anxious, especially since some were only about 2 minutes apart – but just when I’d think maybe it was time to go to the hospital I wouldn’t have another one for 25 minutes or an hour. The pain was enough to make me stop in my tracks and sometimes need to catch my breath but quite tolerable so I wasn’t sure that it was really labor contractions or just some other weird version of pre-labor contractions (don’t worry I’m not a mutant, the pain comes later).
My husband went into work in the morning but came home shortly after convinced we were having a baby that day. I wasn’t quite convinced since I felt like contractions were just a part of life now. I had a dr. appointment and nonstress test already scheduled for afternoon since baby was late. Nonstress test went well, baby’s heartrate not bothered in the least by contractions and dr. made it clear that some of the contractions were quite strong and to get to the hospital as soon as the contractions became at all regular or my water broke because it would be a fast labor since I was fully effaced and starting to dilate, which is what the drs had been saying for the past several weeks (they ended up being a bit wrong on the speediness).
My husband and I left and ran a few errands, and contractions became more frequent but still not regular so we decided to take the dogs on a walk. At this point I was having several bouts were they’re coming every 3 minutes apart but just when I think maybe it’s time to go in I wouldn’t have another one for 20 minutes. My husband tried to convince me it was time to go in but I was convinced the pangs were all going to disapear and I was going to be pregnant for another week. So we went to get pizza for dinner (not sure that’s the best pre-labor meal but I wanted pizza).
When we got back from dinner my husband called my mom, who lives several hours away, and told her she should come up, I wasn’t really happy about this and still not convinced I was in labor, but he was and wanted her to be here when her grandbaby got here. We watched a movie and he kept trying to convince me it was time to go to the hospital but I hadn’t slept much the night before so wanted to try to get some sleep at home. Laying down ended up not being very fun so I paced for awhile waiting for the contractions to space out again, my mom arrived and went to bed, and I continued pacing but then the contractions spaced out again so I went to bed. 10 minutes after laying down, with no contraction that I could feel, I felt a pop and when I stood up I realized my water broke. So at 4 am it was time to go to the hospital and that wonderful 24 hour window of time they give you begins. Luckily it only took us another 12.5 hours….
