Given that mortgages are so much cheaper than rent, (Atlanta: Rent for a 2 bedroom is around $1200 vs Mortgage for 2 bedroom condo is $600) what would you consider for your living arrangements with your SO? Please feel free to elaborate. 🙂

Rent. Personally, I REALLY don’t want a mortgage without at LEAST a contract for the venue signed (preferably married, though Fiance and I did consider buying a few months ago). I can only imagine breaking up with a mortgage – nightmare!
ETA – if you do decide to purchase a home, maybe only have one of your names on the mortgage.

I refused to move in with SO until he made a commitment to me. We lived separately.

@MapleMoose: Fiance and I lived together before we were engaged because 1) we knew we were going to get engaged (but weren’t in a rush because we were freshly out of college) 2) it did make sense financially – but renting together is not much of a commitment 3) we wanted to!

I just couldn’t sign a mortgage with someone I wasn’t married to or at least about to be married to.

Fiance and I already own a home together, just not married yet. Honestly, owning a home together is pretty much being married. Without the paper.

We considered buying a home a while back, before we got engaged. I was a bit uneasy about it, but if we had gotten the opportunity I would have done it.

- Wedding: December 2013 - Home
We are going to rent initially and buy after the wedding.

I’d do whatever made financial sense to us. In this case it sounds like purchasing instead of renting.

We are planning on renting a flat after we get engaged.

Rent! I don’t care if it’s cheaper im not buying a place with a guy until there’s a pair of rings on my finger and the marriage contract is signed.

SO and I are currently renting together… Where we stay, it’s actually way cheaper to rent than to buy (Crazy, i know!).
We’ll probably be renting for quite a while longer unless something crazy happens and the prices of property drops drastically…

We are renting. But renting here is half the price of a mortgage.
We pay $960 a month on rent for our 3 bedroom house. That same house a mortgage would be around $3000 a month. Which is almost my entire monthly wage after tax.

We’re looking for a house to buy because a 1 bdrm here is at lease 1000/month but if you dont want to live in a dump you have to go 1500.
SO much cheaper to buy and we’ve been together for 7 years living together for 2. So it’s not such a big deal as far as relationship goes

Wanting to buy a house was one of the things that pushed Fiance to propose. I don’t feel comfortable buying a property if we’re not married. We already live together and rent but plan to buy next year after the wedding.
