I love my wallpaper but there isn much light that gets into the room because my fiance insists on keeping the blinds to the adjoining conservatory closed all the time!!
I curently have dark purple accessories (cushions, ornaments etc) which look lovely but are also very dark.
I want to change it up a litle bit and add another colour to brighten the room up a bit, what colour should i go for?
The wall paper is only on 1 wall the others are painted with magnolia emulsion.

@ChocolateLime: Actually, what about a big mirror for above your fireplace to really brighten up the room? I know it’s not a color, but I was just thinking that a mirror could help!

I agree that a mirror would look great and hopefully reflect some light.
To brighten up the purple and gray, how about some bright yellow accessories? (Pillows, art, furniture, etc.)

What about whites, creams, and plushy fabrics? White coffee table/end tables, larger white mantle with a large white mirror overtop. Also work in some warmer wood tones. It could really help brighten things up. I’d start there

@pengoala: We do now have a mirror above the fire place, but its black lol- but very pretty and ornate. it does help reflect some light but not a great deal.
@MargaritaVille: I was thinking creams. maybe a mix match of textured cream cushions??
ETA: I just found this coffee table which i love- its cream on the inner side and might look nice with a big cream ornament/bowl or something on top ??

@ChocolateLime: Ah okay. Ooh, yeah, cream cushions! Lighter colors to pull away from the darkness!

I second a big mirror above the fireplace!!!

Your furniture is too dark, I agree that cream or pale gray, maybe even a pale gold would look awesome in that room.
I know that bright colors (bright yellow, bright red, and turquoise are in) but I feel like this overly bright look is a fad. If you want a more modern look these colors are great. But based on your wallpaper, it feels like your are a bit more traditional.
Would you consider painting the black mirror frame? Also, add more dramatic lamps, this will also help brighten the room.
Also here is a room from Jane Lockhart that I LOVE! Similar to yours with dark walls w/ purple accents; the cream and pale gray furniture really brightens up the room, and they have a black mirror too. 🙂

@pengoala: +1 A mirror will catch light from other places in the room and it makes the room seem more open. I think a mirror would love great about the fire place.

@ChocolateLime: I think that coffee table is too heavy. Even though it has the cream color, its very chunky and would add to the heaviness of the room (dark walls, dark sofa, dark tables = heavy). Something light, both in color and in substance/size, would help to lighten up the room.
I image this:
You could also do a lighter-colored rug.

How about mixing in some silver or light gray cushions for variety? I think that lamp next to your sofa has a silver detail in it, I think it would look very nice. I love that coffee table and you’re right, it would look amazing with a cream bowl – or maybe a silver candlestick? Also, I think what makes your room look quite dark are your dark sofas. Maybe if you decorate them with a light-coloured throw or small blanket it would help brighten them up. And snuggling up on the sofa under a nice blanket is heavenly!

This is our sofa so it is also quite dark- My fiance bought and chose the wallpaper and furniture which looks lovely but yes it is dark. Will adding cream cushions to a scatter back sofa look odd?
I will try and take a proper picture of the whole living room later tonight to give a better idea.
The room looked nice and bright when we moved in. i came home one day from a trip to my parents and it was black!!

@ChocolateLime: Haha, that’s what happens when you let a man decorate, mine would probably do the same!

I think the light rug would help a ton!

@ChocolateLime: I think creme colored pillows or a throw over the dark couch would really brighten things up.
