- Wedding: June 2014
Okay, so i moved into my current apartment last summer. i chose it because it had air conditioning, carpet (previous apartment had hardwood floors which look beautiful but i hated hearing my upstairs neighbor all the time), dishwasher, and other modern amenities. in my city, most apartments are older and are in great shape but don’t have air conditioning, dishwasher, garbage disposal, etc.
anyways, my Fiance practically lives with me, but i am the only one paying the rent. he buys almost all of our food and groceries, and just had to buy a new car and is paying of student loans, so i understand that his money needs to go to those obligations. for this reason, though, i really only consider the apartment to be “mine” since he has never paid for the rent or utilities.
this apartment has had some issues since last fall. including pretty serious flooding after a bad storm, which caused the carpet to reek and they wouldn’t replace it for over a month! it was the worst month ever. they eventually took care of that, but left some of the cosmetic fixes undone (ex- they need to paint the walls because the paint warped from the rain. they chipped off the old paint and spackled it, but never painted over it). then a few weeks ago, i noticed mold under one of the radiators. the maintenance guy keeps telling me “it’s just dirt; it’s just from the steam; it just hasn’t been painted; etc” in order to not fix it.
last night, i noticed that the carpet was wet outside of the bathroom. it turns out that the faucet was dripping and it was sliding down the bathtub, onto the floor, and out through the doorway into the hall. i called the guy this morning and he said he’ll get a splash guard to stop the dripping from going onto the floor, but the “faucet is a huge job so he’s going to wait for that. plus, it’s a brand new faucet!” well, i don’t care if it’s brand new, it still needs to be fixed.
all of these issues are pretty minor, but they just add up. i hate seeing the streaky white spackle instead of paint. the mold grosses me out. the bathtub shouldn’t be angled so that water comes out onto the floor everytime someone takes a shower. i can’t wait to own a house, but we definitely don’t have the money to buy/build a house right now.
here’s where our dilemma comes in… my lease is up at the end of June. My rent is currently $750/month and will be going up to $775 when the next lease starts. a coworker of mine (works in a different part of the same department) has a 2 family house and his tenant is moving out in June. I’ve been to the house, and it’s really nice. when i saw it before, i was jealous of the tenant even though i wasn’t thinking of moving at that point. He charges $650/month for rent AND that includes cable and internet! (which is $120/month for me) so when he told me that, i was really excited and want to move. i could save at least 2k in the year before our wedding, which would really help. the area is really fun, but it is farther away from my FI’s family and my family (by about 15 minutes). it would be an easier drive for me to work, but would be an extra 5-10 minutes for my Fiance.
my FI’s main objection to moving is the fact that he has an aquarium set up in the apartment. i think that we would be able to make it work when we move everything, and sure we might lose some corals but in the end i think that it would be worth it. he is TOTALLY against moving. he even threw a fit back when there was the flooding issue because he didn’t want to have to move the aquarium if they replaced the carpet!!! even though the carpet was so smelly!!! i told him back then (october) that i would probably want to move when the lease was up, and he said “okay” but now that it might actually happen, he is adamantly against it.
what do you guys think i should do? should i force moving to save the money and hopefully have less maintenance issues? or should i suck it up and stay here to make my Fiance happy?
