sallyloves90 :  the longest distance I’ve personally done is a  25 miler in Yosemite National park along the John Muir Trail which is actually part of the Pacific Crest Trail that is goes from Canada to Mexico.

I am section-hiking the Appalachian Trail. I did all of NY (100 miles) last summer in one 9-day trip. I will do all of Connecticut in another trip this summer. I am an avid hiker and camper, and i can tell you multi-day backpacking is a whole different game, especially if you go solo. How comfortable are you hiking and staying out overnight right now? Do you have the 10 Essentials systems? What do you know about different gear and safety/navigation? More info on your current starting point would be helpful 🙂 do you have any specific questions or topics you’re wondering about?

sallyloves90 :  It is on my bucket list as well!! There is a woman on Youtube who has done the AT, CDT, and PT who makes amazing videos about it. Her channel is called Homemade Wanderlust. She vlogged the hikes, and makes super helpful videos about her experiences with prep, gear, etc. My husband and I like to binge watch her videos at night.

Getting used to the weight of the pack and strengthening your knees especially and lower body is most useful. Getting used to constant elevation changes is helpful. It’s constant climbing up and down every day, and fully loaded with food and water, my pack weighs just under 40 pounds. As far as necessary gear, look up REI’s Ten Essentials systems. You will need all of it but some things can be shared and divided if you have a partner. If you’ve never done any overnight trips, start doing those and practice with your gear. Find out what works and what doesn’t. You’ll need way less “comfort” and hygiene items than you think you will. It won’t matter to you after Day 3. Most of it is mental. Our bodies are capable of way more than our mind lets us believe we are.
