longdistancefiance :  If it works for you, that’s all that matters!

If you end up deciding on an in-person proposal, could you and your guy agree that you’re engaged before, and start the paperwork, and then save the ring portion for when he’s visiting you? I think that would be sweet as well!

Is being engaged going to help your visa process, have you researched this in depth? We have recently applied for my Fiance to have permanent residency in my home country, under the stipulation that we are ‘common-law’ married (i.e. living together for 2 years). For us, being engaged does not have any validity in the visa process, and if we were not common law we could not have applied on the basis of being engaged. I’m not sure if this will be different for you? If it were me personally, I cannot imagine not hugging and kissing my Fiance after he proposed to me, I think that would upset me looking back in the future to be honest. But of course I do not know either of you, and you need to do what’s right for you guys!

I see no problem with a long distance proposal.  My father was in the military.  He sent my mother a giant stuffed bear, a note, and a ring. Still happily married 22 years later.  There is so much pressure these days to have every little detail be perfect.  As long as you two are happy, I say go for it.

I really wouldn’t recomend sending the ring over, there are a few stories on the boards about rings getting lost in the mail. I’d just get the visa paperwork sorted out as soon as possible and get the ring only when he will personally be able to deliver it. I guarantee it’s not the “material aspect” (ring) of being engaged that’ll facilitate the visa application/acceptance.
