I’ve never heard of having to pay extra for length before, but it makes sense. 5’11” doesn’t sound that tall, though, so I doubt you’ll encounter dresses that can’t be made long enough. I guess you’ll just need to ask the consultant.

I’m pretty sure you would have to pay for extra length just as some designer’s charge for petite sizes. But it would depend if you want it at floor length, a couple inches off the floor, how much crinoline, and other factors.

I think you just have to wait for them to measure you (hollow to hem) and compare that to measurements of the dress makers.

Ironically shorter people have to pay to trim the lentgth, and taller to add it.

They should really start making dresses good for the majority of brides. I am 5’3″ and they said I will have to cut off a big piece of hem. I guess that would be just enough length if I was 5’11”.

I’m 5’10” and I really didn’t have a hard time finding a dress.  I guess it depends on if you are wearing heels or flats.  I’m getting married outside, so I’m wearing flat sandals and the length on my J Crew dress is perfect (as was the length on all the dresses I tried on there..plug plug).  It’s just really important that you tell your consultant your concern and see what they can do.

I think it really depends on the designer. I am relatively tall and tried on some dresses that were perfect length with heels and some were super extra long… 🙂

OMG!!! I am so happy that I just read your post. I am a little over 5’10”. When I went wedding dress shopping, I was so pleasantly surprised! Wedding dresses are made for those 5’10”-5’11”! Fact. All of them! At all of the stores I went into, the consultants were all “you are so lucky, blah, blah.” (It’s similar to designer jeans  – make them long enough for the ‘everyone’.) This was the first time in my life that every single thing on the rack was made to fit ME! Not only was the length perfect (I saved tons in alterations); but the waists & busts all hit in the right spots.

Also, short girls are the ones who pay extra for special length orders. I know, it was like a foreign language to me too! I guess if you are below a certain height, then everything hits at the wrongs spot – waist on hips sorta thing – so it’s either too tough to alter or too expensive – thus, they pay more to special order shorter dresses.

Go dress shopping and don’t worry – they’ll fit!
