Hi, I’m looking for a long formal dress for an event for which I will be about 21 weeks. It will be fairly cold by then so none of my summer dresses work and all of my fall/winter ones are really fitted and will likely not fit. I’m short with a short torso and already feel like I am showing really early. Should I buy a maternity dress and if so, from where? Or should I look for a regular dress that isn’t too tight around the stomach? I would also prefer for it to not look like a bridesmaid dress. How early should I buy the dress? Any ideas are welcome 🙂

ASOS have loads of maternity options – a colleague of mine got a beautiful maternity formal dress from there.

I would try on either loose or high waisted dresses, depending on the stretch of the fabric you might want to purchase a few weeks before.
For reference- I am 5’1″ and about 140lbs before I got pregnant, have gained about 12 lbs and am currently 24 weeks. I am also carrying in front (think volleyball under the shirt). I cannot wear maternity dresses- they look like I am a little kid playing dress up. I have gone to 6 weddings/formals since 14 weeks and have done exactly what I said above. Think boho style, stretchy fabrics, empire waists. Cheaper and you will wear them again for sure!

I was wearing maternity at that time – look on pink blush maternity website

Twobirds has lovely gowns which you can wear during pregnancy http://twobirdsbridesmaid.com/collection/classic/ and could potentially wear after! It is $$$ though, but you could get repeated wears out of it.

I wore an empire waisted non-maternity dress at 32 weeks pregnant. There was an obvious bump under there so it was a little shorter in the front than pre-pregnancy, but it was floor length so it didn’t really matter since it was hemmed to be worn with heels and I was wearing flats. I could have worn a maternity dress too – I was just feeling cheap at the time since we had just bought a bunch of baby gear.
I would start looking about 2-4 weeks before you need the dress, especially if you are ordering online.

I just went to a formal wedding at 18 weeks (def showing). I ordered a bunch of dresses from lulus in a size or two bigger than my normal size, tried them all on then sent back the ones I didn’t like. I wore the the “depths of my love” maxi dress. It comes in lots of colors and was $60 with a coupon code. It was really comfortable and looked cute with a bump. Their dresses are pretty long though so you will need to have it hemmed if you are shorter.

Hatch Collection has this very nice dress; paired with these very modern earrings and cuff bracelet from Aha Life, it’s a great look:
From onor, an Etsy store:
paired with a necklace from the Museum of Modern Art’s online store and simple gold or silver stud earrings:

I’d by a stretchy wrap dress that you can wear again. I’d get a short one and wear tights. When can you wear long dresses that aren’t a summer maxi dress?

Thank you for all of the ideas! I will look into them. By the way, I’m jealous of the prices and the options in the US compared to Canada.
