Last night, my boyfriend remarked that I have really long fingers compared to my palm. I was surprised because I have fairly small hands and have always consider my fingers a little odd looking. I mentioned that I always thought my fingers were weird looking and he said, “They’re not weird looking. They’re just really unusually long and skinny.” So, today I set out to find out what is considered a normal finger to palm ratio.
So, the international average for women seems to be about .78 for finger length vs. palm length and 1.01-ish for finger length vs. palm width. Finger length idex of .44
As it turns out, apparently I do have pretty long fingers (for my hand size). My ratios were .909 for finger length vs. palm length and 1.15 for finger length vs. palm width. My Finger length index was a whopping .53 (wow).
So how do you guys fare? Long fingers? Short fingers? Big palms?
EDIT: Average hand length for women is 6.77 inches.
My hands are 6.3 inches long. 🙂

I have long fingers too.
You know how about half of all art projects from ages 3-9 are made from hand prints or traced hands? I used to dread those, because next to my friends’ cute chubby child hand art, mine looked like E.T.
I actually really love my hands now though. Used to roll my eyes when my mother would say I could be a hand model, but I can kind of see it now.

@shaka: haha That’s great! I’m just imagining (you being a hand model) telling people your career at the moment requires that your hands stay soft and supple because they’re a precious commodity.
What was that episode about a hand model? Was it Seinfeld?

Please ignore my strangely uneven manicure that seems to have taken over the top part of my nailbed in this photo (I have since stopped going to that salon lol). A photo for reference of my (supposedly) relatively long fingers.

I was always told growing up I have “piano hands”… though I never played lol. I did mess around on an old organ my grandmother’s boyfriend had (who lived with her).
My index finger and palm length and palm width are all exactly the same. Which appears to put me at the top end of long fingers smack in the middle of the chart under abnormal but not into unlikely? If I’m reading it right. Which I think I am cause it’s pretty darn impossible to divide the same number by itself and get anything but 1. My dad’s mom had the same hands.
Also, the biggest part of my ring and index finger has always been the middle between the fist knuckle and first finger knuckle from the palm. And I can only wear rings on my ring and index finger, because on the pinky and index the biggest part is the base so they just slide off.

@MrsTangerine: Sounds like piano hands, for sure! 🙂

Any more long fingered folks? 🙂

@RenoSweeney24: I have long fingers, but my palms are long, too.
My finger index length is 0.46, my finger to palm length ratio is 0.81, my finger to palm width is 1.08.
My hands are 7.25″ long! My finger (middle finger) is 3.25″ long, but my palms are only 3″ wide. My hands are just really long overall, and my fingers are fairly thin.

I am just off the national average,
0.986 for Finger Length to Palm Breadth,
0.78 for Finger Length to Palm Length

I seem to be pretty much average, although I always thought I had long fingers.. I guess I was wrong!
.75 for fl to pl
1.00 for fl to pw
ETA: But apparently my hand length is longer than average, at 7.2 inches. That makes sense though, because I’m 5 feet 8.5 inches tall, which is taller than average.

I have long fingers with average-ish palms. It annoys me when I get gloves for Christmas or my birthday (which are within 2 weeks of each other) and they’re all small. I need medium or large (!) gloves.
Then they look weird on the ends of my child-sized wrists.
