I am 6 weeks pregnant with my second child. I am looking forward to an incredible birth experience this time around (the first time was unexpected, and a number of years ago and the process was more filled with fear and anxiety than I would have liked). In thinking through my options, for quite some time prior to becoming pregnant, I have known two things:
1) I want a natural child birth (My son was born natrually, and I am very happy that this was our experience. It wasn’t intended, my labor was too quick for medications, but I feel it was God’s way of stepping in and providing us the experience we deserved).
2) I am leery of allowing an OB run the show, as I know that they are surgeons first, and birthing practitioners second. Also I do NOT want a man delivering my child (at least I am set on this at this point).
I am meeting with an OB in a couple of weeks for my first visit (at the 8 week mark), but would also like to explore my options for a Doula or Midwife (either in conjuction with the OB, Doula/Midwife taking the lead with OB on standby within a hospital linked practice, or a solo practice with hospital, birthing center, or home based birthing options).
Is there anyone in the Central Iowa/Des Moines area that can provide a recommendation or share your experience. I know that Iowa Health has a Midwifery connected with Methodist hospital and I was going to start there, but I have also seen a lot of solo practices when reseraching.
Thanks in advance!
