ladyv76:  I’d try looking for Destination Wedding locaitons.  Even though you’re not really a Destination Wedding I found out that those venuces are more willing to cater to a smaller wedding.  I had the same problem with several vendors telling us to add 40+ people to our wedding and then talk to them.  In the end we ended up with an awesome venue for a great price for exactly the number of guests we have.  I also look at the cost difference between an package venue vs. a per person venue.  Since per person venues often have minimum guest requirements (and steep fees if you’re under) a package deal might be a better deal.

I got married here and could NOT have been happier.  55 guests.  Let me know if you would like more info.   It’s NJ of course, but verrrrry close to the border.  http://www.bellogiornocatering.com/

Would you be willing to do a restaurant? A place with a privite room would be nice!

I would suggest looking for a small inn or bed and breakfast. We are also having a small wedding and found a great historical inn to use as a venue. They have a garden area that is the perfect size for our ceremony and reception. I hope you find something!

Have you searched the venue directory on intimateweddings.com?

We had our 35 person guest list wedding at a b&b. Our other top contender was a hotel with a great wine cellar space. Our trick to avoid minimums that we simply would not be willing to reach was to have the wedding on a Sunday. If it MUST be on a Saturday for whatever reason, a restaurant may be your best plan. Or maybe some sort of public park, local museum, or private art gallery could work, as they usually don’t have guest minimums. But the park, museum, and gallery options will require outside catering, so you may have to let go of your hopf for an all-in-one venue in order to get a Saturday with no minimums.

We had less than 40 people at our wedding and we rented out an entire restaurant for the night. We had cocktail hour followed by a 3 course dinner and it was perfect! Is there something like that you could do in your area?

I agree with lovekiss, Sat night minimums will take many traditional places out of your reach. City/ state parks, art galleries, museums, etc. a vineyard or B&B are also good choices. I have a 50 person guest list and I’m doing the wedding on a Thursday at one of the most desirable and expensive venues in our town. $8500 minimum on Saturday night. $850 minimum Mon-Thurs. no brainier.
