hmmm, Britex would be my first choice as well – they definitely have a large selection of luxurious fabrics.  a quick yelp search turned up Satin Moon Fabrics – I don’t have any personal experience, but it may be worth a shot!  Another one that came up was Peapod.  Good luck!

I heard of a place called Laci’s in berkeley, but haven;t been yet.  Maybe someone else has?

I know it would be a little far to drive but Fabric Depot in Portland is the best (I was actually there last night).  You can also shop online but I can understand that you might want to see it in person.

I found a great place in Oakland’s chinatown called silkroad fabric. The fabric was 25% of what it cost at Britex (Although admittedly far less selection). The people were MUCH more helpful than at Britex too, which I found very expensive and snobby. I also found some pretty bridal fabric and trim at piedmont fabric. Reasonably priced too.
