Fiance and I are considering getting a new kitten soon, probably around Thanksgiving. We have 2 4-year-old cats right now, and since we moved into a townhouse feel like we have enough space and would really love a 3rd cat.
I want to get a young kitten, preferably around 3 months old or less (But at least 8 or so weeks), just so I can introduce him/her to my other cats and not have any real dominance issue arise. Our two cats now get along great with no dominance issues, so that is my goal with the new kitten.
We are looking into adopting a cat from craigslist rather than a shelter for a couple of reasons. 1 being that we have had not so great experiences with the shelters around here and 2 being that we don’t want to have the shelter call our leasing office because frankly I don’t want to pay anoher $30/month for another cat. Yeah, it’s sneaky but whatever. The people across the way have 2 large dogs, which is technically not allowed, so it’s not like anybody is going to notice if we have another cat.
I’d like your advice on what all a new kitten needs in terms of vet care, since our other two cats came neutered and up-to-date on everything from the shelters we got them from.
Can I just take it to the vet and say it’s kitten’s first visit and they will tell me what I need to get? Or do I need to specifically request certain things? I know not to allow a new kitten near my other cats until it has at least been FIV/FelV tested (or however it is spelled).
Also, how young did you get your cat and what tips can you give me? We got our other 2 at about 3 months old.
