I do…. I love it.  It hurts like a bitch going in though, FYI.  Take some ibuprofen beforehand, like a lot of it.  The first day was the worst, then I had the most awful cramping for like 4 days and now I don’t even feel it at all.  The only “side effect” I’ve had from it is it caused me to break out – nothing major, but I’ve never had any acne issues so more than I’m used to.  Another girl I worked with had the same thing happen.  Other than that I had one period the month after it was inserted and not so much as a spot since. I do have a “fake period” week though where I get the symptoms (like tired, hungry, moody) of a period, but not an actual period.  I’m glad I got it, I was awful at taking the pill lol

I actually tried to have one inserted yesterday, did not work out so I went through all that pain for nothing! Ugh.

@classical_wolf:  I don’t really understand what happened, but the dr. could not get it to place.  So I called the GYN back this morning to see if Skyla could be an option, my dr. seems to think so, but she wants to confirm with the dr. that tried to insert it what exactly happened.  Hopefully I can get more answers this afternoon.

@classical_wolfI have it, love it!  Got it in 2010, good til 2015- my $30 copay covered it… now that’s some cheap BC!!  I can’t take hormones in BCP (I get insane migraines), so this is a great option.  I don’t have any children, so when they put it in… it hurt!!  If your doc doesn’t give you anything before, take a good amount of a pain reliever.  I took 3 midol, and let me tell you.. it did nothing.  I would say like 3-4 extra strength tylenol or ibuprofin.

You will feel a pretty intense pain TWICE… once when they get the insertion device in place, and one more time when they put the actual Mirena in.  JUST BREATHE…It is pretty bad, but it’s also REALLY FAST and then over. You will probably spot and have a good amount of cramping for a day or so after- just load up on the pain killers and lay low.  Looking back, I wish I milked the pain a little more… so see if your doc will give you an Rx for a few stronger pain killers.  I had intermittent spotting for a few months after, but it really wasn’t that bad.

Like @babs95, I also break out.  But I have hormonal acne anyway (BCP will work, but like I said I can’t take it… I’d rather not get preggo!)  It doesn’t work for some, but it’s not that common.  “Not working” means your body essentially ejects it and it comes out of you.  You will know pretty soon after having it if this is the case.

Good luck- you’ll love it!

I have it! I also do not have children and mine was completely covered by insurance πŸ™‚

My doc gave me some cytotec to help soften my cervix and this probably aided my insertion. It was painful while it was going in and then I had the WORST CRAMPING OF MY LIFE for 2 hours afterwards. It didn’t help that I was in class that day. That was the only time that the mirena was painful.

I did feel the strings of the mirena for about 5 months. It was  not bothersome- just a sensation. SO said that he could feel them once or twice, however, I’ve had it for an entire year and the strings are extremely soft now.

@classical_wolf:  I have had for 3 months and I love it! Completely worth 30 seconds of pain. I haven’t had to think about BC or worry about getting pregnant or anything. I’ve only had it for three months and I had my period right after having it inserted and since then I had a couple days of spotting the next month and so far nothing πŸ™‚

No bad side effects other than mild cramping the day of insertion πŸ™‚
