I’ve been doing some research on wedding DJ’s and photographers- and giving the Fiance heart palpitations with their quotes! I’m wondering if anyone has found a great DJ/MC (not cheesy and professional enough to keep the show on time and the photographers and others involved informed when special things are about to happen) for under $1000 for a 6 hour event.
Same question for a good photographer who can capture those special moments, have things in focus, deal with different lighting situations, and do basic editing for color correction and light.
I’m not opposed to going with a really good student photographer or someone who does it as a sideline as long as they are good!
Maybe I’m hoping for too much of a bargain in LA, but if anyone has recommendations, I’d love to hear them!

@Prrrrpl be careful. Remember it is your big day, and pictures are the most enduring item from your wedding day. Photography is almost always a “you get what you pay for” service. Just Make sure to check out whomever you pick completely.

Definitely not for photography, but you might find a decent DJ for $1000. The guy we usually recommend starts at $1500, but DJs are usually going to be cheaper than photographers because they have a lot less total hours they have to invest in a wedding. For photography the bulk of the work lies after the wedding happens, not on the day itself. If you want a talented, experienced professional to document your day you are going to need to at least double or triple your budget. You may be able to find someone who will do it among the part timers, people starting out, or student route, but you are going to be taking a risk.

Thanks for all the advice!
I found a great DJ and wound up raising my budget a bit for that since it’s the big element that either makes or breaks the whole event. Plus we needed him for the ceremony and cocktail hour and he came very highly recommeneded. Scott at Coastline Music if anyone else is looking. Extremely professional. 🙂
For the photographer, I went with Isabelle Ruen, whose work is wonderful in the fashion and editorial area and has been published in magazines. I want to get a mix of classic wedding shots and more photojournalistic shots. We both liked her personality and professionalism, so I worked out a deal where she simply shoots the event with a second photog, and does very basic editing for exposure and color then gives me the jpg files. I will take care of any other editing and do with them what we want. If you’re good with photo editing software, that may be something to consider for any brides who are looking to save money!
Thanks again Bees!

@Prrrrple: Just make sure your photographer is completely onboard with you editing their photos. For most professionals this isn’t somethign they are going to offer you as an option.

It looks like I am a little too late, but my husband is actully a DJ and has done everything from Bar/Clubs to Corporate Events to Weddings to any other party you can think of. When it comes to weddings he has an great MC who is bilingual (english & spanish) that is always with him. When we got married the MC and other DJs they contract with hosted and DJed our wedding and it was terrific.
Not long ago was I scouring thess boards for tips and recomenedations since were on a budget but trying to plan a 200+ person wedding. I know what it is like planning a wedding and all the details that are involved, so believe me every detail is covered so you have nothing to worry about.
So I am happy to give any information to anyone who is still looking for a DJ, PM me and I will get right back to you right away. I guess you can consider me his booking manager since I am always the first contact and we can talk a little bit about what you want and prices. We are flexible in price and I would be happy to give you a quote, We are located in the San Gabirel area however we hace ventured out of range 🙂 best of luck on your wedding!!!

I’m in Orange County, and found a guy from Inland empire who does a lot of weddings. We got the basic package which is 8 hours, 1 guy, and then all of our prints online (that he edits). We have full access to the prints – and it’s all for $650. Check out his work online and on facebook:
