On vacation in Mexico I was careful to take off my ring every day and put in the safe after breakfast. Actually one of the first things I said to my husband on our first morning was I have to take my rings off and I also showed him exactly where I put them in case I forgot and got frantic looking for them. Well this one morning I forgot to take my ring off after breakfast (which is very unlike me). We headed to a beach in Cancun with calmer waters better for swimming. We started to play volleyball right in the ocean in very shallow water and within 10-15 minutes in I immediately noticed my ring was gone. Everyone that was playing, my husband and friends and family began to frantically search. They grabbed snorkeling gear in hopes that they could see in the crystal clear waters where it was. I panicked and immediately felt it was a lost cause as someone mentioned it is very hard to find when it’s in the water. Someone came up with the idea to get a metal detector from the front desk so I ran with my mother in law and grabbed someone in the mean time that worked there to try to help. He told me he will make some calls but it is very hard to find them when they are lost in the water, and that the metal detector could not be used in the water. So we continued to frantically run towards the lobby as he followed me and grabbed two other workers to talk to us. They said they have someone that can help with a metal detector that will work in the water but he was on lunch and would be back in 20 minutes (which would feel like eternity). Now I began to break down – anxiety attack just thinking my husband is going to kill me for being this stupid lol. The one thing I tried to focus on was that the ring could be replaced as we had insurance on it. But there is something just so sentimental about an engagement ring that at this time those thoughts weren’t helping so much. I walked backed towards the beach with my mother in law and sat for a minute on the beach chair because I felt like I was going to throw up and pass out at the same time as I cried and said “it’s gone – there’s no way”. She was great trying to encourage me to stay positive and not dwell on my stupidity. Just then one of our friends runs over with my husband with the ring on her finger. I had a complete meltdown. One of the lovely couples that we were playing with – the husband found it directly under the volleyball net. I didn’t take the ring, but as I’m having a complete breakdown, I immediately ran over to the couple to thank them with my husband. Gave them both hugs and wish they allowed us to get them something but they were on their way to an excursion it seemed. The irony of it they were on their honeymoon. The friend that came over to give me my ring also lost her engagement ring once and found it on the road after retracing her steps. It felt like a miracle today especially since locals say they are very hard to find in the water. As my husband puts it “I’m fortunate”. The ring shall not leave the safe for the duration of our stay, and at dinner my husband was already trying to find a stand in cheap ring online for me to wear. I never had one because my size 4 finger makes them hard to find. You might wonder why am I sharing this story? Well we all do stupid things and make mistakes but I think the one thing that prevented me from going into a full out panic attack was that we do have insurance on the ring. Ladies take the time to check your policies and appraisals, and if you don’t already have insurance do it! I will be calling when I’m back home after a scare like this just to make sure everything is good and up to date. If you have a crazy lost your ring story please feel free to share it!

Not me but my friend. She lost her set in the Grand Canyon about 4 years ago. She noticed a couple hours after it happened and they retraced their steps with no luck. The rings are probably at the bottom of the Grand Canyon still. She ended up wearing her great grandmother’s ring for a while until she found another set that she still loves just as much as she loved her first set. Her and her husband now have ring insurance! Haha.

Ring insurance is imporant for sure lol.
I hardly wear my engagemnt ring (the real pricy one) if I’m working on location or on vacation(it’s really big and gets in the way)so i normally leave it at home. My wedding band is actucally only $22 so i don’t mind if I loose it because I know wear I can buy another one
But I’m glad you found your ring!

Sooooo glad you found it. Best thing is to not travel with it!

ljm308 : oh wow, your poor friend. The Grand Canyon sounds like one of the worst places possible to lose your ring. Glad they opted for the insurance and she was able to get something she loved.
Monica BoatwrightDavidson : thanks! Very smart and I hope those that don’t have ring insurance will think twice after reading my story and others. I know there are many worse outcomes than mine.

Glad you were able to get it back! definitely anxiety inducing! I don’t travel with any jewelry at all when we go out of the states. Less likely to be a target that way or losing it-knowing myself lol. when we are married I will wear a stand in plain band and that will probably be it

I’m so glad you got your ring back, but am confused as to how it fell off your finger so easily?? I’ve worn mine for all sorts of activities, swimming, snorkelling, walking, and there’s no way it would slip off my finger. If yours is the right size I don’t think it should have done that either.

Get your ring resized. If it’s big enough to slip off without you noticing it then it’s sized wrong. I was sized at a comfortable 5.5 but the jeweler made it 5.25. It was very tight for the first month. Now I no longer feel it a all. I have to give it a little twist to get it off.

Thank goodness you found it! I would be so devastated if I lost my engagement ring. We decided to leave our rings at home when we went to Mexico for our honeymoon. We knew we’d just stress out about them the whole time if we took them.
Once a family friend of ours had the diamond in her engagement ring fall out when we were at a corn maze at night. And she found it! I’m still amazed she was able to find it in the dirt, in the dark, in a maze, with a flashlight.

So glad you found it! I think first off you should get it resized. Especially if you are in Mexico, it is hot so your fingers should even be swollen while there. And also with the food, alcohol and less water we typically drink, you should be retaining water. My ring turns only in the winter, but in the summer or when I’m retaining water, I have a hard time getting it off. Also, you can a nice stand in ring online in your size. I got mine at Walmart as they make size 5, and I even got complimented while in Mexico this year on my stand in ring lol

SabL22 : thanks, I am glad too! That’s smart.
LaPetiote : I’m confused too. I’ve been married 6 years and never had an issue like this. Thanks I am going to look into resizing it.
Ambi D : thats good to know, thanks! Looks like 3.75 here I come lol. Stupid tiny fingers ugh.
hikingbride : I can see your reasoning behind that now lol. Hope you enjoyed Mexico! I never had an issue when in Mexico in the past but I have always left it in the safe during daily activities. Next time it stays home, you live and you learn no matter what age you are 😉
Wow isn’t it amazing? Thats awesome. My friend I mentioned lost hers on the side of the road after taking it off to put lotion on in the car and forgetting it was on her lap. They retraced her steps and found it sitting on the side of the road. Untouched and not run over by a car- Crazy! That was when they decided to buy insurance on it.

Thats so scary! Im glad you found it. Your ring definitely does not fit properly… it should never just fall off. Add a temp sizer and go back to the jeweler!

katiefitness92 : Aww thanks, I hear ya! my fingers are the same way. Usually is so tight when I’m hot and I’m pretty much always hot – I don’t get cold easily. Never have an issue with turning in the summertime so yeah this was a bit of a shock and I’m going to definitely look into resizing. Thank you :)) I believe it, some of the stand in rings are gorgeous glad you found one you love! Take care

I lost my set for 4 months a couple of months after being married!
I’ve always been really bad at taking my rings off through out the day to wash my hands, or cook, or clean but typically if I’m going to take them off for more than just a couple of minutes I put them in my jewelry box. About two months into our marriage, I was in my husband’s home office and I took off my rings to clean something. Well approx. two minutes later I completely forgot I had taken them off. I remember looking down at my hands and thinking “hmm, that’s weird, I forgot to put my rings on today” and went back to cleaning. The day was almost through and I wasn’t going anywhere so I didn’t give it much thought until the next morning when I did go to put them on and they were no where to be found. I frantically searched the entire house and called every single place I had been in the past couple of days. My husband came home and I had to tell him about it. We tore apart our house, our car searching for those rings. Over the next few months we never stopped looking. We posted ads online, my husband even called into a local radio show to describe the ring and offer a reward. All to no avail. We started looking at new wedding bands, figuring the engagement ring would just have to wait.
A few months later my husband was going through a box of files in his office. At the very bottom was my wedding set😊. He promptly ran downstairs, and re-proposed lol.
