- Wedding: June 2014
And I thought I was so organised….
We booked our reception venue in Nov 2012 for our June 2014 wedding, a great historic little place in our hometown. Brilliant restaurant/function room & a small motel out the back. We even got the wedding night incl in the wedding package! I’d previously organised a work function there & so I knew they were great price & quality.
By pure chance, my mum went in this morn to book her accommodation for the wedding night (a few family/bridal party are planning to stay there the night of the wedding for ease). As mum waited to be served, she heard a snippet of the conversation of the guy behind counter & current customer – that the owners had just walked out on the business & the place was in shambles!
When it was her turn, my mum was like “what was that about the owners leaving? My daughter’s wedding is here!!” Guy told her the story – said the previous owners walked out Easter w/e & he walked in Easter Monday to deal with things. Said that restaurant/functions weren’t happening at the mo. Guy looks us up in the system – has our details but claims there’s no trace of us paying the $500 deposit. Mum calls me on the spot (we were out of town) – I confirm that yes we paid & I have invoice & bank statement to prove it. She says she’ll ask more questions & get back to me.
Visit mum this afternoon – guy says he’s got no trace of our money & if we want it back, we have to contact old owners – he’s happy to give out her number. My SO calls the venue, guy on phone remembers talking to mum & confirms everything. SO says “mate I’ve got an invoice from your venue for our payment” but guy insists he doesn’t have the money & only way to get is to call the old owner. SO gets this woman’s phone number & calls her. Phone goes to message bank – not a good sign!! He leaves a message.
I think this is weird – I’ve previously dealt with this chick & she is awesome & professional. This is so out of character. She calls SO back about the situation 5mins later. Her version of events is very different!! Apparently the lease was up & they chose not to renew it – not walking out w/o notice. She claims that despite new guys claims, all bookings & info etc is at the venue but new guy is being difficult. Apparently all discussion between old & new owners is only happening through lawyers.
Old chick is helping those who contact her by referring them to a couple of other venues who are picking up the bookings of her old business & transferring the deposits to the new venues (nice offer, but I’m not keen on these other places). She says she’s happy to help us do this or she can return our $500 deposit. She’s being super helpful, like all our other dealings with her. SO & I’ve discussed it & asked for our $500 deposit back.
I’m unsure what this means though – old owner seems happy to help, but new guy was essentially correct – she has power over the deposit…
So yeah. I might have a Plan B *fingers crossed* Our ceremony location is a function centre, so I’ve emailed the function manager there to see if the venue is still available that night for reception also. Unfortunately I won’t get an answer til after the weekend. If this place is already taken at night… I dunno what to do. Old place was picked after lots of hunting… that’s why we picked it!!
At least I’ve got time for a Plan B… mum says the new guy told her there was a wedding booked in 4wks & he had no idea about what was happening with that booking. Eep!
