@MissTBee: Oh Lordy, best of luck! I’d try to see about getting back part or all of your deposit money. Perhaps you can pay it on credit card (so it’s easier to dispute if they do fall through), but I wouldn’t take the hit right off the bat. I’d hear her out, like you said, but I’d go there in person to get some sort of solid resolution, or try to get a bit of your money back if you decide to leave. It’s a lot harder to dismiss someone in person than it is over the phone. I hope that you get a good resolution!
