Short Version: Ordered a ring from since1910 (Verragio ring!) shipping from New York to a Canadian City overnight priority express. Customs had to review it and give back to FedEx to ship to us, but somewhere in those processes they have either lost or had it stolen. Declared value $8000.00 and no idea what to do!
Hey Ladies, I posted a while back that my SO had ordered an engagement ring… which long story short was half true. He had almost ordered a ring but decided he wasn’t confident in ordering online- he went with since1910 to get a Verragio ring. After doing some more research and educating himself on the 4 c’s of diamonds he finally ordered a ring through them in order to have a Christmas eve proposal.
Verragio took longer than expected to finish the ring… and was sent our via priority overnight mail from New York on Dec. 22 with the promise that he would receive it ON Dec. 24. Not the greatest news, but he could still work with that timeline. The ring would be coming on the airline, and would be clearing customs at our local international airport.
Well, the 24th came and a “clearance delay” showed up on the online tracking. So, he called FedEx and they needed him to fax a release form in for customs to declare the value and release it back to FedEx for delivery to our house. He rushed out to “shop last minute” when really he was rushing to Staples before they closed to fax the release in. And then nothing happened- they never cleared it on the 24th and they were closed on the 25th and 26th. So, on the 27th he drove to the airport and spoke with the FedEx office there and they hadn’t received the package back from customs yet.
SO was very upset with everything going on, as we were supposed to be leaving to my hometown (4 hours away) that day, and he had planned for us to be engaged already so we could celebrate with my family when we got there. He decided to make the trip anyways and keep an eye on the tracking, to see if it had been “released” yet.
The airport is on the hiway we drive on to get back to our house from my hometown so he told me he was waiting on a Christmas gift for me and that FedEx was supposed to have it at the airport. I honestly hoped it was my ring so I went along with it-no questions. The package showed “cleared” online, so he thought he could just pop in and get the ring and propose last night- a New Years Eve proposal a week later than planned!
Well, after two hours at the station waiting for information, it turns out that somewhere between customs having the package that morning, and FedEx receiving it in their sort facility, it has gone missing. The last scan was that customs had cleared it and approved it to move on to FedEx… they spent the rest of the afternoon going through security tapes and trying to find out what happened, but they don’t get full access to the tapes at customs, for safety reasons. So they had to request that customs review their own footage and determine who took/where the package ended up.
At this point, after waiting in the car reading for a few hours, my SO came back out and told me everything. He is devastated! The ring is MIA and somehow customs/FedEx have lost a package with priority overnight express shipping with a declared value of $8000.00
He emailed the jeweller but of course today being New Years nothing is open. We are expecting a call from FedEx sometime tomorrow after they have completed an official review of all of the trucks at that facility and their warehouse along with what customs finds out/decides on their video surveillance. At this point, as I understand it, technically since1910 needs to be the ones to deal with a replacement and the money, as they had shipped it with FedEx and it was lost/stolen before we received or signed for it…?
Any thoughts or suggestions on what to do right now… we just feel helpless.
And we leave in two days for Las Vegas for four days (my surprise gift to SO for Christmas) so we won’t have contact with them in two days!
