How did it help? What is it about?

Our pastor had us read it together as part of our premarital counseling. It is phenomenal.
It’s about how men and women need different things to feel appreciated. Women need to feel loved and men need to feel respected and how often times those things go uncommunicated or not communicated effectively.
Here is the summary from Amazon about it:
“Discover the Single Greatest Secret to a Successful Marriage
Psychological studies affirm it, and the Bible has been saying it for ages. Cracking the communication code between husband and wife involves understanding one thing: that unconditional respect is as powerful for him as unconditional love is for her. It’s the secret to marriage that every couple seeks, and yet few couples ever find.
Today, you and your mate can start fresh with the ground-breaking guidance that Dr. Emerson Eggerichs provides in this book. His revolutionary message, featured on Focus on the Family, is for anyone: in marital crisis…wanting to stay happily married…who’s feeling lonely. It’s for engaged couples…victims of affairs…pastors and counselors seeking material that can save a marriage.
Using Dr. Eggerich’s breakthrough techniques, couples nationwide are achieving a brand-new level of intimacy and learning how to: – stop the Crazy Cycle of conflict – initiate the Energizing Cycle of change – enjoy the Rewarded Cycle of new passion
And if you’ll take this biblically based counsel to heart, your marriage could be next”
I give it a hearty recommendation. They have workbook that goes along with it now too!

@caiters_marie: Thanks for summing that up! 😀
@smiley3: Essentially, it shows you how to communicate (even in arguments) without making it personal or harmful. It talks alot, too, about understanding that men and women aren’t necessarily wrong in their opinions/feelings, they’re just different.
One of the things I adored about it was the list it gave of HOW to respect your husband… it was crazy how such small things made such a huge difference.

My dad and step-mom lent us this book- I haven’t read the entire thing yet, but what I have read has been helpful and insightful… They do pre-marital counseling at their church and say it’s the best text they’ve found. Thanks for the reminder!!!

I’m reading the companion book by them, Motivating Your Man God’s Way, and it’s incredible. It has helped me so much. I figured I wanted to prepare for marriage just as much as I was preparing for a wedding, and I have been blown by how much God has shown me through reading it. I want to read L & R now too. 🙂
