Hi bees. I went Black Friday shopping for the first time in my life today, for a wedding dress of all things! I’ve been to a few boutiques and have been experimenting with different styles, so I and knew which type of silhouette I was looking for today. Mermaid/trumped/fit and flare, with beading and/or crystals. I love a glamorous look. I ended up trying on an Allure Couture dress that checked off all the boxes and knew it was “the” dress. It was 50% off its original price and would still be in my budget with alterations, so I of course jumped at the opportunity to buy it.
However, I’m now looking at the photos of it that my mom took and just don’t feel it’s as flattering as it looked in the mirror. And it’s really bumming me out. I don’t know if it’s the poor lighting, or because of the fact that the dress is a little large on me and will have to be taken in to make it more fitted around my waist and hips, and maybe a petticoat to make it flare out slightly more. I hate feeling this way because I LOVED it when I had it on, but looking at the photos of me in it, I feel it’s just “meh.” Do alterations and a tailored fit really make that big of a difference, or am I better off looking for something else? I’d hate to get alterations done only to find out that it’s still not flattering.

Also posting this one that was taken in better lighting. I like the look it it better in this photo but still feel as though the fit looks a little off in the butt.

I would say that alteration and lighting do make a HUGE difference, also on the day, with your makeup,, hair and a professional photographer! A lot of places don’t let you take photo’s for this reason. If you loved it on the day in person, I’m 99% positive you will absolutely love it when it fits your properly! I’d go back in and try it on though to make sure and then delete the photos!

I agree with previous poster. With proper alterations, this dress is going to be the bomb. Your body was made for this dress and I think you look very dreamy in it. The dress is so beautiful and I really think your over thinking this. It’s perfect on you!

Alterations, better lighting, hair and make-up, plus professional photography will make a world of difference. If you loved it in person I wouldn’t worry a snap shot your mom took not looking the best.

Wow! This is a gorgeous dress, and you look amazing in it!!!
I think it’s the lighting and fit that maybe feels a little underwhelming, as you said. I wouldn’t worry about it!
Maybe it’s me, but the torso looks a little long for you? Front and back. Like the waist of the dress is just below the narrowest part of your body. Maybe that’s what is looking off in the bum to you.
When it’s tailored it should take it up that notch, and with a pro photographer the sparkle and beautiful textures and shades should come right out.

Once its altered, that dress will be to die for on you. Serious, dont worry about it, its a beautiful dress and you will be stunning.

There have been tons of posts here from bees who got dress regret after looking at the terrible quality photos from their appointments. Honestly I would not put any stock in these photos at all for all of the reasons other bees have mentioned. If you loved it in person you will love it on your wedding day.

I totally get how you feel. I’ve fallen in love with many dresses at the store only to fall out of love with them after looking at photos later. However, my situation is very different from yours. In my photos, I’d notice that the shine of a dress made me look wider, or the sheer lace torso would not cinch my torso in, or the silouette made me look boxier and shorter.
You have a great figure and that is a STUNNING dress. Imagine how it will look in pro photos. Pinned up dresses always look weird. If you want more of a booty pop, they can take the skirt in under the bum. It makes a huge difference in emphasizing the mermaid. The white fabric on the dress almost looks like white smoke or fog. It is so dreamy. And that bling!!
Congrats on your find!

blackvelvet : Agree with PPs. Alterations and lighting make a huge difference but, that said, I still think it looks amazing as is.
Hold on to the good thoughts you had while wearing it and don’t let the worry creep in, or you’ll be miserable during your whole wedding planning journey. Have faith that you picked it for the right reasons and are going to look stunning on your big day.

blackvelvet : is the beading gold/beige? That color doesn’t come out well in photos. But even if it does look bad in photos…which it doesn’t…it’s gorgeous,…you will look gorgeous day of and you look bomb in these pix
