I just wanted to write a quick message to those who are thinking about choosing a less traditional ring as your engagement ring. Do it!!!
I think I started loving the idea of a sapphire engagement ring back when Lady Diana got one, but by the time I got engaged for my first marriage, I wasn’t brave enough to buck convention. Now I’m older, wiser, more confident and realize that this is about me, us, and what we think is beautiful and what means something to us.
The truth of the matter is that the diamond engagement ring, I believe first made popular by Queen Victoria, has only gained it’s monopoly on the engagement ring market because of the diamond sellers and their marketing. It’s also my understanding that other stones are gaining popularity such as the sapphire, ruby or emerald and that other countries aside from the US often give stones other than the diamond.
Yes, diamonds are considered more valuable, but why do think that is? It’s all about supply and demand. The demand for diamonds is great because of the years of clever marketing to make us believe that diamonds are the only choice as engagement rings, and the supply is carefully controlled.
Aaaaaannnywaaay…….none of this really matters. All that matters is that you feel that you can get what you want. Whether it’s a beautiful diamond, sapphire, ruby, emerald or even an opal or pearl…..go for it! You’ll be so glad that you followed your heart.
