Oh hmmm….I just saw your update…$800 for a 1ct is going to be tough.  You could try second hand.

I think looking at diamonds in person is important as 2 diamonds can have the same specs, but look completely different.

Lightbox’s 1 carat princess cut lab diamonds are $900: https://lightboxjewelry.com/collections/all/products/princess-pave-pendant_white_sterling-silver_1carat

You could probably contact one of the chinese companies to custom make a semi mount for you and then have it set locally or work with a local jeweler.

Looking at secondhand diamonds is also a great option. We went that route.

What do you mean by lower grade? Do you mean a warmer color or more inclusions? Are you talking about a round brilliant? They are much more expensive than fancy shapes, because more of the rough is lost in the cutting.

If you have to ask this question, you should get a diamond. The people who love their moissanite specifically want moissanite. Diamond doesn’t really factor in their decision except as something they don’t want.

I would only ever buy a Moissanite!  So beautiful and a great bang for your buck.  You can get a VERY well cut high quality Moissanite from China for very little money.

FrizzyCleopatra :  you don’t have to have either.  Get a synthetic diamond. It’s a genuine diamond.   I have earrings from Lightbox and they’re beautiful, another bee has an engagement ring with a Lightbox diamond. I don’t think the link works but search this site for Lightbox and the thread with many pictures will show up. Happy hunting!

Lightbox Synthetic diamonds avail now 1 ct $800!

Another vote that you get a diamond of some sort. I’m in the boat that believes if you’re leaning towards getting a diamond and deciding between that and a Moissanite, especially when there’s a tight budget, get the diamond because it’s “mind clean”.

Depending on what size finger you have, you might like the way a smaller diamond looks on you and you can easily go down in clarity to an eye clean SI1 or SI2 with a princess cut, though I don’t think you should with a step cut emerald because they show inclusions easier. As PP mentioned, I would spend most of your budget on the diamond, you can get a decent diamond for under $2000: ~.80ct, G/H, SI2 for $1500.

FrizzyCleopatra :  I got a lab diamond from brilliant earth that’s a j color and SI1 clarity and I love it. I think If you really want a diamond lab ones are a great option because they often cost less. Mine might not be the best quality but it’s still super sparkly and I don’t notice much warmth in my stone even with it being J.

Here are some options if you are okay with second hand (but if you are okay with lab diamonds, I would prob go the lightbox route!) I also don’t know what size you want, so these are all a bit less than 1 ct.

https://www.idonowidont.com/diamonds/emerald-cut-89-cw-vs2-f-diamond-engagement-ring-114-total-carat-weight (nice quality, not quite 1ct, but a bit of a fancy setting)

https://www.idonowidont.com/diamonds/081-ct-princess-cut-center-stone-02-ct-side-stones (this is a nice stone, not a great setting for what you want)

https://www.idonowidont.com/diamonds/1ct-platinum-solitare-si-1-h-princess (you could ask if this was eye clean, good size, and looks pretty nice)

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/search?carat_min=0.8&color=I,J&heirloom=true&order_by=wire_price+asc&shape=Emerald#diamond=E80-21380Z920 (a bit above budget)

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/diamonds/search?carat_min=0.8&color=I,J&heirloom=true&order_by=wire_price+asc&shape=Princess#diamond=S90-079Z82191 (a bit above budget, but beautiful)

Anyways, if you want to give a bit more specific thing that your’e looking for, ie, at least 1 carat, no visible inclusions, I will look some more!

I adore diamonds. Honestly there really is no comparison. That being said- last year I ordered a cheap moissanite off of Jeulia. The 1c solitaire in 10k, I think it was about $400 canadian. I had never seen one in person and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I had zero expectations about it and didn’t really know what to expect. Honestly I absolutely LOVE it! I find myself wearing it more then my diamond rings to be honest, they’re a fun and pretty stone. I love the moodiness of the stone- the insane rainbow sparkles it throws are gorgeous! Considering that mine is probably not the best quality I’m very happy with it. I’m on the hunt for a better quality stone, a 1.5 to 2c solitaire in rose gold. Moissanite is a gorgeous gem in it’s own right, but shouldn’t really be compared to diamonds any more then you would compare sapphires or ruby’s to them.

If you honestly want a diamond then you should definitely hunt around for one you love. But if you havent seen a moissanite in person check one out, you may find you love them just as much or even more.

FrizzyCleopatra :  Look on briliant earth and clean origin for a nice lab diamond. I guarantee you’ll be happier. It doesn’t sound like you want moissanite.
