We got married last September 20 and I wanted the food to feel more fall than summer. This was our menu:

Wheat and baquette breads with butter

Poached pear and walnut salad

Grilled tri tip

Salmon with a soba shitake sauce

Mushroom alfredo

Sauteed green beans with bacon and onions

What’s wrong with a family BBQ? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good food is good food. And everyone likes comfort food. Well, most. It’s your wedding! If you want BBQ and comfort food, go for it.

Pulled pork is one of my favorites. I love it with beer bread (roll it out and press cookie cutter hearts into it for a nice shape), corn bread, mashed potatoes (mashed potato bar, perhaps? Bacon, chives, sour cream, butter, cheese), buttered corn, mac n cheese, cinnamon apples, coleslaw, potato salad, dirty rice, baked beans, chili, strawberry shortcake and a whole bunch of other stuff.

BBQ is my FI’s speciality and he makes a mean pulled pork. I’m jealous that you’re having it at your wedding (in a good way)!

keevolpi:  Take you normal pulled pork menu and glam it up a bit by substitutions.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Pears instead of mac and cheese or potato salad

Green Beans with Bacon

thinly sliced caulifower, carrots, red onions tosed with a vinaigrette topped with almonds

or a fennel and orange salad

a crock pot full of soup – serve in mugs

keevolpi:  There are quite a few Texas Roadhouse Green Beans knock off recipes online. Try some out before the wedding.

julies1949:  These all sound delish, but I would put the bacon on the side instead of directly on the green beans ๐Ÿ™‚

OP please have a vegetarian/vegan option!  I couldn’t eat the salad at my own sister’s wedding because it was loaded with bacon instead of having it on the side for people to add if they wanted it.  You can definitely have vegetarian items at a BBQ- one of my vegetarian friends is getting married next month and they are having BBQ too!

mishinthecity:  Good point. They could also serve 2 versions. Part of the flavor of the roadhouse beans comes from the bacon. It’s not just a topping.

ETA As long as vegetarians are provided with a balanced meal, I don’t think there is an obligation to alter the ingredients of every dish to make it vegetarian friendly. Good labelling is important for some dishes where the contents may not be readily apparent.

keevolpi:  There are a ton of vegetarians in my circle so I always assume there will be some at every event.  I have a friend who has celiac as well and my caterer is just going to make her a separate dish (we’re having a buffet).  Would you feel comfortable asking her for ideas of something that would accomodate her allergy?  I often bring my own food when I can because I don’t expect to be accomodated, so she may feel more comfortable doing that as well.

julies1949:  I believe it!  I loveeeeee bacon, my body just doesn’t ๐Ÿ™  My FI’s family cooks a lot of stuff in bacon and it is so tempting.

Are you having any other than pork for a main? My fiancé can’t eat pork and I know of a few others in my circle who can’t/won’t eat it as well. Just a thought!
