I would definitely serve mini sandwiches, and also make it clear on the invitations if you aren’t doing a full lunch

I’ve heard of many really successful receptions that were desert receptions only. I think if you have a good enough selection it’s a great idea! Just make sure that you make it clear on programs or invitations that it will be desert only so that you don’t have people who skipped lunch and have empty stomachs!

I think dessert would be fine. I wouldn’t expect lunch at that time.

I don’t think you have to. Just write something like “dessert reception” or “cake and punch to follow.” If you do plan on having a 3+ hour dancing event I would suggest adding in a heavier choice.

I wouldn’t expect lunch at that time either.  You could always put “Dessert Reception to Follow” on your invites to avoid any hungry (and grumpy) guests.
