I’ve been searching high and low for makeup person to come to me on my wedding day to do my (and my mother’s) makeup. One of my friends got married last month and hired a MAC girl to do her makeup for a flat $150 (which included the trial of $50) for her (I don’t know how much she got charged for her attendants). I liked how it turned out so I contacted the same person just a month later and got quoted $100 per hour for bride and/or attendants. When I asked how many hours does it normally take to do a face, she said 1-1.5 hours per face….now I’m really having second doubts. I liked her work but makeup for my mother and I can easily turn into a hefty $350 bill (1.5 hours each + $50 trial for me) and that doesn’t even include airbrush or fake lashes (I said I would bring my own and my mother doesn’t want any).
Does this seem a bit…high to you? I don’t live in the boondocks (right in a second-tier cost city in the middle of most makeup artists’ serviceable area). The time for the service is 11 AM so not really all that weird either. I am willing to pay up to $250 but it worries me since I really can’t gauge what the total would be and it could easily reach into the $300s : I have looked into makeup alot and never have been quoted an hourly rate…
What would you do?

@saltandpepper: To me it does sound like a lot. Here in Houston it usually takes the MAC counter artists like 30mins (if that) to do make up. I’m getting airbrush and I’m only being charged $65 plus $10 for lashes. And that artist is coming to me. $65 for m bridesmaids too.
Edit: maybe it’s that price cause she is traveling could that be it?

The location she has to travel to is literally smack in the middle of most local make up artists’ area map. It’s easy to get to and close to everything, pretty much where alot of MUAs count as the lowest charge or no charge zone. I do think the charge could be that it’s just me and my mom instead of a bunch of bridesmaids. But if she’s gonna charge by the hour then I can’t even imagine how $$ it would be if all three of my bridesmaids decide to use her on the wedding day. We’d be paying some serious $$$.
I think if she can do our makeup in an hour or less, then I’m more than happy to pay $250 just for the ease and for her talent, but I really don’t want to catch myself watching the clock on my wedding day and dreading each hour that passes by….you know? :S
(I also highly suspect bridal makeup can be done in less than an hour. Mother is older and needs more coverup than pretty young things, so I’m sure that’ll take an hour and most likely more as well).

Does she remember you from your friend’s wedding? How can she legitimately charge you a different price than what she JUST charged a friend who referred you to her? I’d remind her that So and so referred you and she mentioned your prices were “around” $X amount.

When I priced MUAs to come to me, it cost on average 2.5 times as much as to have them do it at a salon. I spent like $90 I think on my makeup, done at a salon, and it took about 25 minutes max. (PS. that means having someone from that same salon come to us was like $250 per person). So, really, I don’t think $100 an hour is unreasonable.
