It’s not REALLY a huge splurge, but I just had to do it. I’ve been fighting myself this whole time! The one thing my Fiance has really wanted since we started planning the wedding is a string quartet. Weird, right? It doesn’t need to be a quartet per se, but he really just wants that sound during the ceremony. I never would have thought of it myself, but I think it’s a cool touch.
Last summer, we went to the farmer’s market every weekend, and there was always this family band – all ages, from 4 – 50 – and they played this glorious string/classical/bluegrass music. I would get CHILLS. They played Amazing Grace and I almost wept in the middle of the market. I love bluegrass already, but because they’re all so technically proficient, it had this classical technique to it and it was perhaps the most beautiful music I’d ever heard in my life.
So, I run up to them and ask if they do wedding ceremonies. They do! They play straight classical as well as classical/bluegrass. I exchange emails with them and it’s going to cost $500. Now, other, more boring string quartets in our area charge $750-$900 for the ceremony, so this was, I guess, a deal. And this isn’t even a quartet! It’s like 7 or 8 family members.
But I kept thinking that our (mostly) secular ceremony was going to be so short. $500 for about a half an hour of work? But I had a dream the other night that Fiance and I could exit the ceremony while they played their goosebump-inducing bluegrass version of “You Are My Sunshine.” It was my mom’s favorite song (she passed away 10 years ago), and our wedding colors are yellow (sunshine!) and gray. I seriously cried thinking about it.
So I just booked them. A total splurge. (After all, couldn’t we just play string music on a CD or something? Or find a friend of a friend who plays cello?) But I know it’ll be so amazing to have this talented, charming family be a part of our wedding day!
Our parents are mostly paying for the wedding but I’m going to try to scrounge up the money to pay for it myself as a gift to Fiance…

sounds like an excellent splurge….and one i think we may make too. i don’t know why i had never thought of “you are my sunshine” for a song during the ceremony but i may totally steal that idea from you…my mom used to always sing that to me as a little girl, i love that song. such a perfect recessional song.

That sounds great :). That’s totally justifiable!

I think it will be worth every penny. Sounds like it will be absolutely perfect. $500 is a very good deal too

I think that’s a good deal for such a large band, and a very talented band from the sound of it too!

Wow, that is a fantastic thing to splurge on. Well worth it!

I’m so jealous!! I totally wanted a string quartet to play during our ceremony, but couldn’t justify the $750+ cost.

oooo is it going to be a surprise for him???

I don’t know that it’ll be a total surprise… But I think it’s something that the two of us (especially him) really would like to have and our parents shouldn’t have to pay for!

@pb and j: You should definitely go for it. It’s such a great song – I love that it can both be very sweet or very sad. There’s a lot of power in it!!!

Definitely worth it! As a violin player, I can say that string instruments sound so much better live than recorded, and you’ll remember it for the rest of your life 🙂

I think it’s going to be worth it. I rather spend my money on what I really want instead of settling (and still spending money) on something that I kind of like.
