Well most people do their wedding invites 2/3 months before the wedding*, so maybe 6+ months from you wedding would be a great time to send out the Save-The-Date Cards. We are planning a wedding for Dec. 18th, exactly a week before Christmas. So I wanted to send out mine ASAP since people need time to arrange their Christmas/New Years plans! Just sent them out last Friday! With a notecard wishing them a Happy 2011! We made magnets! Both Business Card Size and 4×6, for the elders/parents! They turned out AWESOME! (Vistaprint.com)

Best of Luck!!!

Like CupCakeMeg said, six months or so is a pretty good time.  If you have lots of guests coming from out of town, though, the sooner the better!  I plan on inviting about 30 people from overseas, so I’m going to send my Save-The-Date Cards out eleven months before the big day.

We are getting married in October.   Most of our guest will be traveling to our wedding, so we are sending them out now.

I want to make sure everyone has plenty of notice and time to make travel plans.

@CupCakeMeg: Did you purchase your magnets via Vistaprint?  How were the prices?  Did you put a photo on yours?

@Lindsaygooding: We did use VistaPrint! I got 25 FREE SMALL (Business Card Size) Magnets and then I ordered 20 LARGE (4×6) Magnets! Total was under $20! We had a caricature made of us! Here is the post I made about them! http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/my-stds-are-here-1

**My recommendation is to play with VistaPrint, styles, ideas, etc. Then sign up for email notifications, always check your SPAM folder, but they are always having great promos and FREE stuff!

We’re getting married September 17th but haven’t had our engagement pics yet (which we want to use for the STDs).  It’s cold here until March/April for outdoor E-pics so we’re going to be pushing it to get them out at 5-6 months ahead of time.

We’ve already had several Out of Town friends and family ask for details so they could start making arrangements, so it may be a good idea to just verbally let your guests know.  By the time we get our E-pics, it may be too late for us as well.

VistaPrint has inexpensive Save-The-Date Cards if you do decide to go that route AND they have all sorts of designs (if you decide to do one w/out an E-pic).
