So, fellow Weddingbeers- Does anyone happen to know if it is possible to make a zip up dress into a lace up? I found a dress I love, but it zips in the back. I prefer the lace up (at least on me), as it tends to flatter my body shape. Just wondered if anyone has done this or heard of this being done? I haven’t talked to my seamstress yet, wanted to see if this is possible before I bring it up! Thanks in advance!!

yes of course!! i’m going to get it done in my dress.. since i bought it a size smaller hopefully by the wedding it will either fit just right. either way it’s gonna be changed to a lace up because i prefer it that way.

Absolutely. If you’re ordering the dress made, as opposed to buying it off the rack, you often have the option to order it either way. If you’ve found a great dress already made, your seamstress should be able to do this. She will need some extra fabric; the corset-backed dresses generally have an extra panel that sits inside the lacings, so that you’re not showing off your back all day – and because the lacings look best if they show, which they won’t if you have to lace it closed completely. She may be able to take this fabric from somewhere else in the dress, if you need other alterations, or may be able to buy a matching fabric to use.

Thanks so much ladies! I was hoping I wasn’t just dreaming too big! Glad to hear its possible. Didn’t want to sound like a complete idiot by asking my seamstress to do this, if it isn’t possible. Thanks again!

It can absolutely be done…..I bought a Christina Wu 5916 lace dress that originally have a zipper back….i was like you and wanted a corset style back because i felt it looked better on my body, plus less alterations……My wedding was in Ocitober 2008 and i ordered my dress in March of 2008. The designer did a beautiful job with the corset and I received my dress in April of 2008! Good luck, and congrats!
