I was in 7th grade when I started. So that’s 13? I also colored my hair and wore nail polish. Raised by a single dad if that helps. Haha

I have a sister who is 15 (HS sophmore). She’s been doing a “full face” since she was 14 (freshman), but started with a little mascara and stuff around 11/12 (so as soon as she got into middle school) and it’s just gradually gotten heavier as she’s gotten older and learned what she’s doing. I know for sure I was wearing makeup by that time as well.

I was allowed in middle school, but did maybe 5 times for school dances. I was allowed any color nail polish, and my favorite was silver. My mom would have hated black nails, but she’d have let me.

I started wearing very light makeup in middle school. As in, eyeliner and maybe mascara. I started wearing foundation in high school. I still never wore anything crazy. Again just eyeliner and mascara but now the added foundation because my skin was so terrible (bad acne). I never wore blush, lipstick, bronzer, any of that kind of stuff.

I don’t see anything wrong with red nail polish. Is red polish a sign of being promiscuous or something?

I was 13 when my mum allowed me to wear makeup, being a teenager was the milestone age I had to reach and looking at it now, I think that’s a fair age to start. Even as a 13 y.o. though, I was only allowed very pale lipglosses and a little eyeliner. I don’t ever remember thinking that that was unfair and as I got older, I never felt the need to rebel and wear heavy makeup. Just to add, when and where I was growing up, we were not allowed to wear any makeup at all to school, so really I’d only put some on on weekends. I’ve always been a makeup junkie though and now wear moderate makeup if I’m leaving the house.

Imo at 14 she is (or soon will be) in high school and that is old enough. You could let her wear makeup and still have a say about how heavy or neutral it can be. If you’re uncomfortable, maybe let her wear mascara and a neutral colored eyeshadow now and then at 16 she can move to a full face?

bkprettygirl:  My daughter is 13, she will be 14 in November. She is starting 8th grade this school year and my SO & I have decided to let her wear eyeliner & mascara. She started wearing lip gloss at 13. Nothing colorful just to add shine. We have discussed that she will slowly progress into wearing makeup. So by 16 she will be able to wear a full face.

My mother didn’t allow me to wear makeup until I was 16. I think I wore it for 2 weeks straight & now I only wear it for special occasions.

bkprettygirl:  haha. No need to apologize. I’ve just never heard someone say they weren’t allowed to wear red nail polish before. lol

bkprettygirl:  I remember my mom taking me shopping around 12 and I wasn’t allowed to get foundation but she let me wear lip gloss, mascara–light makeup. By high school (14) I could wear what I wanted. My soon-to-be step daughter just turned 15 and wears makeup, she keeps it tasteful so we haven’t had to say anything. There have been a few days where she didn’t go anywhere that I noticed heavy black eyeliner (winged out cat eyes at that) and if she tried wearing that outta the house I’d say something. For the record I voted 13 🙂

I was a total tomboy too but I would have been kind of pissed if my mom said I COULDN’T wear any makeup at age 14. High school kids do deserve some independence so I think you should let her.

Btw you seems like a really good mom 🙂

My mom gave me make up (and the go ahead to wear it) for Christmas when I was 13. I have no idea when I would let my (potential future) daughter start wearing it- probably when she starts high school.

I was in 7th grade when I was allowed to start wearing makeup to school. 13 is a good age.
