So normally I use drugstore brands. Lately I only use Mayballine Dream Smooth Mousee. The Dream Matte was nice, but any sign of dry skin it was gross. Then I put a powder over it to give it a finished look. Sadly, it doesn’t always hold up long. It’s not normally a problem, but I don’t want to worry about it on my wedding day. I’ve tried adding primers, but I haven’t seen a difference. I’ve also noticed that my eye shadow mixes together and fades very quickly. How do people keep it so perfect?
I’ve browsed MAC and Sephora websites, but I can’t commit. I’ve been to stores when I’ve traveled, but there isn’t any around me. Seriously, they are 2 hours away. I know that the department stores in the mall where I live sell Clinique and other brands, but I have no idea what is best. I tried one of the mineral makeups before, but it didn’t seem to cover much so I sent it back.
Any opinions or recommendations? I’d spend the money on nice makeup if I knew it would look good. I’m not going for a barely there look. I don’t want to look like a clown, but I like the airbrushed/matte look. I wouldn’t mind sticking to the expensive brands and keeping Mayballine for work and such.

Which mineral brand did you try? I’ve recently fallen in love with Bare Minerals–I have very reactive skin, which means that my cheeks and nose are always red, and Bridesmaid or Best Man works wonders for me (plus it’s not full of crap that breaks me out). Were you using it like the directions said?
Other than that, I go for CoverGirl mascara and ELF (Eyes Lips Face) for everything else.

I like Make Up For Ever HD Foundation. I usually mix it with a bit of Smashbox primer and Neutrogena lotion because it’s full coverage. I also like Paula Dorf’s Oil Free Foundation but I hardly use it since I discovered the MUFE HD.
As far as lipstick, lipgloss, eyeshadow, eyeliner, eyeprimer, and setting spray I pretty much only use Urban Decay. I love their stuff. Their eyeshadows, especially used with their primer and a spritz of setting spray, stay perfect for 18+ hours.
For brows and eyelashes I use Benefit.

For makeup, especially the pricier options, it is always better to take the time to go in and have trials first. The consultants will discuss your skin and any issues you have and can even provide samples to try at home.
I wear Hourglass Cosmetics Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation (it is what Kim Kardashian wore on the day of her wedding) and it is amazing. Not only does it last all day and then some but it doesn’t cause break outs (for me anyway) and looks fantastic. It is available at Sephora or online.
The key to any makeup regardless of brand or cost is skin prep. Using the right facewash, moisturizer, toner (if you feel necessary), peel, and most importantly primer will make a huge difference is how any makeup looks and lasts. I highly recommend Mineral Veil Primer (also by Hourglass Cosmetics).

@vorpalette: I think it was called Sheer Cover or something. It was light weight, but I didn’t see a, I don’t know what to call it, made up look? I have a couple very minor acne scars, sometimes a pimple or two and a little but of purple under my eyes so I like to feel like its hidden. Does Bare Minerals offer a money back guarantee?
@Aure: I’ve heard of forever HD, but never actually bought it. How much do you spend and how long does it last you? Where do you buy it? Store/online.
@Treejewel19: I’ve never heard of that brand, but I will be sure to look into it. How long do you let your primer sit before applying anything else? There’s a Sephora about an hour away, but a MAC is 3.. I wonder if I should risk online if they take returns..
@asianyoushi: do you think that you get the same or similar look with the new brand?

I have tried a bunch of brands, but I haven’t loved anything until I tried a starter kit from Laura Mercier, it had a primer, mineral foundation, concealer, brushes, and illunitator. It’s seriously the best thing I’ve ever used, I like it even better than Bare Minerals. It never sinks in to my pores, and it looks really really natural, and never breaks me out. I’m pretty light skinned, but I tan easily without burning and theri Natual Beige color is a perfect fit for my skin. The price might seem high, but there is a lot of product, I bought it last September and I still have plenty left, it’ll probably last me a full year. Here is a link to the kit I bought: http://www.sephora.com/mineral-flawless-face-kit-P240600?skuId=1179100

I second Urban decay for primers and eyeprimers! I have used a few different primers but theirs is definately the best and really the only one I ever saw a difference with. And like she said, it paired with the setting spray (I use de-slick because it’s SO humid here) it really keeps things in place so that I’m really working hard to remove my makeup at night. Just make sure that you are reading the directions and using it exactly as it recommends for maximum results 🙂

These days, drugstore makeup is comparable to high end. There are dupes out there for many highend things. For example, Make Up For Ever HD has a dupe for $15 called NYX HD. I used it on my wedding day and it was perfect. I used it on another bride too. The NARS Orgasm blush has a $1 dupe with ELF brand.
Emilynoel83 on YouTube does reviews on high end and drugstore products. She prides herself on making drugstore products work. She does some great reivews if you are interested in certain products! Regardless on the brand you choose, it’s all about finding the one that works for your skin.

I love Smashbox primer. For foundation, I recently switched to Makeup Forever and love it! It lasts all day but doesn’t feel heavy. My blush is Clinique. For eyebrows I use Dior. Mascara…DiorShow all the way. It’s hands down the best mascara ever. I got a freebie of Clinique’s Bottom Lash mascara and got hooked on that. I love the little tiny brush.
Sephora has an awesome return policy. It might be worth making the drive to the store initially to get your colors matched but I usually buy my products online since I know which colors now.
I recently switched to Kate Somerville skincare products (the sensitive skin line) and love them! My Clarisonic electronic cleasing brush has been the best beauty investment I’ve made it a long time. It seriously gets all the makeup and dirt/grime off your skin without causing any irritation.

@HelloSweetie: Do you feel like you get a really good finished look or just a sheer, natural look?
@MattandKristin: this may sound silly, but does it set your eye shadow?
@MrsElopement: I will check that out as well! I’ve seen a lot of tutorials, but I never seem to do it the same..

THE best foundation in THE whole world is Estee Lauder Double Wear by far. It’s long lasting (I’m talking 12+), thick enough to give you proper coverage, but not enough so that you lpook like you’re caked in it. It doesn’t cling to dry skin, or dry your face out, but it does absorb oil so you don’t feel all greasy. It’s a very thick and creamy foundation, the only thing I will tell you about it, is that you have to work hard to blend it, as once it’s dried, it doesn’t budge, and it can be hard to cover up smudges! It’s an oil free foundation and won’t cause spots. I would avoid the mineral makeups, they’re just the latest fad and personally I don’t think they’re that good either. Another tip, is to use a serum. They make your skin have this really gorgeous glow that seems to come from inside! I use a L’Oreal one. I also love their eyeshadows and lipglosses. My favourite mascara is Maybelline Colossal Cat’s Eyes.

I really like Make Up For Ever HD Foundation that a couple other bees have already mentioned. It’s pricey but looks great in pics! The best drugstore brand i’ve found that can hold a candle to the MUFE is Loreal True Match. It goes on beautifully and you can’t beat the price! Also both of those have great staying power, never had any problems.

I have sensitive skin and am allergic to Mary Kay and Bare Minerals. I used Clinique till I was in my mid twenties (10 years ago), then I switched to Lancôme. I’m very happy with Lancome’s foundation, moisturizer, powder, eyeliner, and mascara. I use MAC eye shadow though. You can’t beat their pigment. Yes, the foundation is expensive but it easily lasts twice as long as what I use to by OTC years ago.

headoverhighheels – Does which set your eyeshadow? The primer or the setting spray? The primer is great because it gives your eyeshadow something to adhere to, it’s like it locks it in place. The setting spray is awesome for all over. If you follow the instructions you spray it on your face before foundation, and then after makeup. It give the makeup something to stick to, then coats it so that It stays. I thought I was going to hate it because I thought it was going to be like spraying my face with hairspray lol, but luckily it is nothing like that. 🙂
