I don’t wear much make up normally, but would like to look put together on my wedding day. I have freckles ALL OVER my face (I have finally come to terms with them, after three decades). I don’t like the look of foundation over freckles where they look ghosted out, and I would not look like myself if I wore thick enough foundation to cover them completely.
Currently, I apply ONE drop of foundation to my face lotion and smooth it on over a primer. It seems adequate to even out my skin tone and make me look human.
Do you think this will photograph well? Do I need something with more oomf?
I don’t know anything about make up really.

I have some freckles and I use a brush to apply my foundation and just sort of buff in on in a thin layer. It does a good job of even-ing out my skin without making me look like I’m all one color. It seems to photograph fine as long as I have enough other makeup on (blush, bronzer, etc)

You should try out a spray foundation (don’t spray it on your face! Spray on a sponge and apply to your face). An example is Dior Airflash. That’s what Carmendy on What not to wear always uses for redheads with beautiful freckles. Spray foundations tend to be less pigmented so that your freckles will show through but are still a bit more covering than tinted moisturizer.

I also have a ton of freckles! I’ve used hydroquinone to lighten them (they were nearly gone at one point), but have since switched to Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair, which I LOVE. It doesn’t have dangerous hydroquinone, but helps keep my skin even and my freckles somewhat light. I’m also a total freak about the sun. I literally don’t go out in it without a hat and sunscreen….ever.
Anyway, on to makeup. The BIGGEST thing is to not get too light a foundation. You have to find a good middle ground between your skin tone and freckles, otherwise you’ll wash out the freckles like you noted. Day-to-day I wear Smashbox BB in Light, and for special events I wear Smashbox Studio Skin in shade 1.2. It’s a good happy medium between my fair skin and my freckles. I wear it over primer, and set it with a bit of translucent powder and Urban Decay All Nighter spray.
Here’s a few pics of my DIY wedding makeup with the products mentioned above used. I use my fingers to blend my makeup; I get the best, most natural coverage that way.

Oh, I bet it feels rather luscious to use a brush, doesn’t it?
raspberrymojito Never in my life would I have considered a spray foundation! (And I am embarassed to admit it, but it was a very good thing you said not to actually spray it directly to my face. 😉
SophieB3 Your freckles are PERFECT! You look absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for the recommendations!
You all rock. Go, Team Freckles!!

The biggest recommendation I can give you is to make sure you look like yourself. If you normally have freckles and then suddenly you appear to have no freckles on your wedding day, it may see odd and you may seem “over done”. If you like how you look in photographs now with the way you’ve been adding a drop of foundation to your mositerizer (that’s brilliant, btw), then I think it should work for your wedding day.
