Hi, I am getting married this July and wanted your beauty advice. I’m normally a pretty low maintenance person, but am using my wedding as an excuse to upgrade my makeup collection. One of my friends is awesome and will do my makeup for me.
I was thinking of going to Sephora and spending between 150-200. I have very fair skin that is dry and sometimes prone to redness, and achieving a nice glowing skin finish is my biggest priority. I have black hair and brown eyes and want to do a subtle but somewhat glamorous retro look to match my 20s style dress. What do you think I should get? Any product recs?
I also want to whiten my teeth at home– any good products? Thanks for your help!

hmm.. are you wanting makeup or skin care recs? also, maybe your makeup friend could go with you to sephora?
for teeth whitening, i used crest whitestrips (the 2 hour ones) on friday and it turned out really well! i’m getting e-pics taken this friday, and wanted to spruce them up and really liked them. they’re not like the normal ones that slide around your teeth – they really stick on there and don’t bug you! so i used that and the advanced vivid white toothpaste and my teeth definitely look whiter.

@elliestan: I’d love to bring my friend with me, but she lives on the other side of the country. So glad we have weddings to bring us together! I was looking more for makeup recs than skincare.
Thanks so much for the tooth whitening recs!

I’ll also throw in here that if you have sensitive teeth, the Whitestrips can be painful. I don’t have an alternate suggestion, b/c the few the over the counter products I’ve tried have been painful for me (although they do work great).

I used to work at Sephora and I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finding all the help you need!
Depending on which Sephora you’ll go to, they all have different lines. I had the most success with Smashbox & Laura Mercier for wedding looks. Stila has some amazing soft colors for eyes as well as illuminating blushes/bronzers.
If your skin is very dry- I’d try using a tinted moisturizer for your everyday- this will even out your skin and still keep it smooth and hydrated. Laura Mercier’s is the one I swear by!
For skincare- I’m a HUGE Dr. Brandt & Caudalie fan!
Hope this helps a wee bit! You can always take home lots of samples and make sure to take notes on what you like/didn’t like 🙂

@gruyere: aww poo! well, there was a post yesterday about sephora makeup recommendations you might wanna check out. http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/whats-the-best-makeup-from-sephora
the MUAs there are pretty knowledgeable, so definitely ask them to help you find your shade in whatever you’re buying – i did that with the Make Up Forever HD that I bought, and it matches perfectly!
Also, the 2 hour whitestrips were like $50 but I think you get like 4 packs of them (a year supply) so really, I think they’re a better deal than the like 14-day ones.

I’d ask the make-up people at Sephora for suggestions. They have always been very helpful whenever I go.
I used Crest 3D White Advanced Vivid Flouride toothpaste and mouth rinse. I was really happy with both products.

I agree with the PPs on the Crest Whitestrips. I used the 3D ones. They are better because they don’t slide around on your teeth. Below is a pic of me getting my hair done on my wedding day so you can see how well the whitestrips worked on my teeth. (Also, I have tooth sensitivity from time to time, and they still worked great for me).

if you have sensitive teeth, just use the whitestrips once a day or even every other day depending how they feel, and be sure to use sensodyne or crest sensitive toothpaste (i’ve found those are the 2 best). i highly recommend them!

I also have a similar style aesthetic with the 1920’s feel for my wedding. My dress, hair and makeup will all refect this time period. And, I am also revamping my makeup collection for my wedding!
I have similar skin – super fair and prone to redness. For reference, I have dark brown hair.
For foundation I use clinque – it’s the only stuff that doesn’t further irritate my red prone skin. The line I use is their perfectly real makeup. Although anything they have is good. Choose what is best for your skintype. The redness solutions foundation is a little heavier if you want longer lasting coverage. I will probably pick this up for my wedding because the perfectly real looks amazingly flawless but needs touchups. I also use clinique blush in peony (i think thats the name – it’s the lightest shade regardless) and mascara, high definition – lasts forever. I have also used their long lasting mascara which is good is you want a water resitant formula.
Although I use clinique on my skin, In My Humble Opinion the best bang for your buck for eye makeup is MAC (buy the palettes – way cheaper than individual eyeshadows – but you can only build your own palette at the MAC stores, not the booths inside larger department stores).
I often do a red lip and muted eyes if I’m going for an old hollywood look:
For my eyes i use either all that glitters or naked lunch (gold/peach/pink tones) with ploof or shroom (off white shimmer) to blend and highlight and use on the tear ducts. If you want a brand from sephora – stila in kitten is awesome for the shimmery gold and urban decay in sin for the off white highlight.
for eyeliner, I use MAC teddy in shimmery brown which i find a little less harsh on the eyes than a black liner. Clinque also make a shimmery brown eyeliner which is good as well. I set the liner with MAC twinks (brown/plum tone) eyeshadow.
For lips – if you want to do red – MAC’s Russian Red is amazing, but if you don’t like the matte, Chanel’s rouge allure in passion is perfect. A more muted but still awesome red is MAC’s hot tahiti – more of muted coral absed red that goes with many skintones – i HIGHLY recomnmend!! If you want to to a more neutral lip, I love MAC’s syrup or fanfare. A great pink is hot gossip or on hold, also by MAC.
I hope some of this helps.
GOod luck and happy shopping.

@d-girl: Wow, thanks for the detailed help. I think 20s dresses are so fun!

Sephora is a great place to get your makeup from because you can try absolutely everything there AND if you realize even after you’ve purchased it that it’s not right for you you can return it (even open, even used) – this is why they continulously get my business because I know I’ll never be wasting my money.
Crest whitestrips are the best. Even the regular 2 week ones. I usually skip a day in between doing them so my gums don’t get sensitive.

@gruyere: no prob – my last several weeks have been seeking out the perfect makeup looks and that’s what I have found works for me so far 😉 have fun 🙂
Oh yeh I should add – for reference – MAC’s Russian Red is what Dita VOn Teese wears – total classic. I also like NARS cruella lip pencil for a sephora brand.

I love MAC! But at Sephara, I prefer Smashbox and Benefit!
Crest 3D Whitening Strips are awesome!
