Hi Amanda, So glad that you decided to go with Alex!  He actually just called me the other day to follow-up because someone else that I had recommended him to mentioned my name when they had their consultation.  He’s a super nice guy.

As far as make-up artists, I looked into some of the make-up artists that come to your place to do your make-up on the day of, but the cost was way more than I wanted to spend, and there is usually a minimum number of people that you have to have them do make-up for (and my bridesmaids preferred to do their own make-up.)

I found Ariel at the Ulta in Monroeville and LOVED her! She did a full trial for free a few weeks before the wedding, and we made a few edits based on what I liked and didn’t like.  Then, I went back on my wedding day for the real thing, and I think it was only, like, $30 or $35 (I ended up leaving her a sizable tip.)  She was super nice, and came in ON HER DAY OFF to do my make-up.  She could have scheduled someone else to do it but she knew that I felt comfortable with what she did, and she wanted to make sure that I was happy (which, obviously, I was.) Also, there’s no obligation to buy any products, which I appreciated.

I know you’re in the North Hills, so Monroeville probably isn’t a reasonable drive for you, but if you’re ok with going somewhere to have your make-up done, check out the people at Ulta and see if you find someone that you really like!

Amanda,
I’m also in the North Hills and I ended up going with Julie from Pittsburgh Makeup http://www.pittsburghmakeup.com/.  She is located in Delmont (which is kind of near Greensburg), but will travel on the day of your wedding.  She was (out of the places I searched) the only one who would travel to do only the bride if no one else was interested in make up.  Her prices were reasonable and I heard other very good recommendations about her on this message board.

Ulta would definitely work, and I know the people at Sephora do work on the side if you go in and ask them.

Good luck!!

Hi Amanda,

I used Amber Altany.  I found her online – she does a lot of editorial/magazine work in Pittsburgh, and I hired her b/c she was available and it was super last minute.  She did a fabulous job, was very easy, and came to the apartment (downtown).  It was $125.  We never had a trial and I just kept saying that I never wear makeup so please don’t do anything crazy.  She listened to my concerns and worked her magic.  I felt great and never once thought about it – no touch ups whatsoever.  I would definitely recommend her.

This is her:

I second Julie from Pitt. makeup. Very easy to work with and super sweet. She came to our house and did makeup for me, my mother, grandmother and aunt and we all loved her.

I have booked Clare from Ciel  upon many favorable recommendations from the knotties.  I will have my trial in the next few months.  I spoke with her and she seems nice!
