I’ve always intended to splurge for professional makeup and hair for my wedding. I have no skills and am not super interested in investing in a bunch of products I will never use again and practicing ad nauseum to do it myself. My wedding is in the early afternoon, and I plan to make a morning of it getting ready with my bridesmaids, so I would really like the makeup/ hair person to travel to me.
The good news is, I’ve found a few artists I really like!
The bad news is, I was a little shocked at the price tags. Approx $90 each for hair and makeup, plus a 4 person minimum (me and 3 others).
The cost for myself I can swallow. It is a very special day and part of my budget.
However, I feel guilty even offering the service to my bridesmaids. They’re all laid back girls who DIYed everything for their own weddings. It’s also not really in my budget to pay for everyone, though I can maybe offer 1 service to each to meet the minimums. Would that be awkward?
How much did you spend, and was it worth it? I want to get a sense for average costs to figure out if I should keep shopping around or just go ahead and book the artists I like. For what it’s worth, I’m getting married in a slightly expensive area (destination wedding mountain town).

I’m paying $300 for my hair and makeup (including trial) and then $130 each for bridesmaids hair and makeup. I’m going to pay for them because even though it’s a lot, I don’t believe in asking your bridesmaids to pay for things for your wedding.
I don’t think you should ask your bridesmaids to pay just to meet the minimum required by that makeup artist. Either you pay for them or you find someone who doesn’t have a minimum. It’s fine to offer to pay for one of the services rather than both, and get them to choose if they want to pay for the other service or DIY it.

I am paying $400 for hair and makeup for the trail, and $400 for the day of, in addition to hair and makeup for all the bridesmaids (7 of them). I am paying for them because I also wouldn’t feel comfortable asking them to pay for their own.

I don’t think it’s fair to make them pay when there’s a minimum. Cover the price to meet your minimum, or hire someone else without mins and give them the option to diy.

I paid a total of $3,400 not including tip for hair and make up.
Broken down, it was $210 per Bm (4) and $210 for our moms. My hair and makeup was $310. I had two trials at $280 each and also paid for tattoo cover-ups, an early morning start and return hair service.

Whoa. Some of these prices are WAY high. My MUA charges $95 for bride and $85 for Bridesmaid or Best Man. For my best friend’s wedding we are using a different friend who is charging $85 for Bridesmaid or Best Man and $35 for hair just down and curled. I think anything over $100 is really pricey and the MUA better be like a high profile celeb artist because it really shouldn’t cost over $100. And I’m in SoCal where EVERYTHING is expensive for reference.

DoubleD : I’ve done a ton of research for my area (15+ vendors) and couldn’t find anyone under 150! I’m going with my regular hair stylist who is cutting me a deal because I go to her every 8 weeks
Mine will be 250 and my bridesmaids/moms are 150, I’m paying for everything because I want to treat them! I’m sure they would DIY if I didn’t and that’s fine too

I don’t think you necessarily have to pay for bridesmaid’s makeup but I think its presumptuous to book someone when you know some of your bridesmaids at least have to pay to meet your minimum.
What happens if you book this mua then ask your bridesmaids and no one wants to splurge on their makeup?

zzar45 : I don’t think meeting the minimum is going to be an issue because several of my bridesmaids have expressed interest (before knowing the cost tho) and we also have talked about treating our moms. So, I would need 1 more person to be interested. Right now, I am leaning toward just booking and paying the minimum and then figuring out who gets the services. It is more than I wanted to spend but I have been able to save in some other categories so it’s not going to kill me.

lucyinsky : It’s $100 for my hair and makeup ($50 for each service). I’m paying for both of my bridesmaids hair and if they want makeup done professionally (they each do their own makeup daily and do a good job) they’ll pay for that service themselves.

I’m in Australia and the cheapest (also happened to be the style that I wanted) was $630 for 3 people and 1 bridal trial. So if you divide that by 4 it’s $157ish per hair & makeup service. Most of the others added up to about $1000 for 3 people for the same service.
I was very happy with it though, natural looking and long lasting. I would’ve never got the same result myself.
