So I originally planned on doing my own makeup for the big day. Then, I decided that I might as well just get it done to have one less thing to worry about the day of. I had my makeup done a few months ago for engagement pics and it was absolutely awful. So I knew I needed to find someone else for the big day. I just had a trial the other day and that, too, was terrible. She applied way too much foundation and I dont’ think it was the right foundation for my skin type (I think she used what she normally uses on her face). I basically looked like a dead person made up for a funeral.
After my trial, I went to Sephora and asked for help. The gal who did my makeup there did a good job. I wasn’t crazy about the foundation she used as it didn’t give as much coverage as I wanted for my wedding, but would make a great every day foundation. I purchased the primer she used and the setting powder.
I’m pretty confident when it comes to doing my makeup, it’s just finding the right products that I need help with. But I plan to get all of that taken care of within the next week by going into Sephora and trying out a bunch of stuff.
So, I guess I’m wondering if I should do my own makeup? Or do I purchase the products and ask the MUA who gave me a terrible trial to apply them for me on my day? Or maybe hire the girl from Sephora? If I don’t go with the girl who did my trial, how do I break it to her (I didn’t sign a contract with her)?
I did mention to the MUA who did my trial a few things I didn’t like about the makeup (lipstick color too bright, too much eyeliner). I thought I could maybe tell her that the foundation didn’t wear well throughout the day?
Ugh! I don’t know what to do! My BMs were going to get their makeup done, too. But I think they would be okay with not. We’re having a very casual wedding so I’m really just going for a natural, glowy look as opposed to glam.

I would not go with any of the MUA u have tried since u didn’t really love any of them. I would either try to find a new one or do it yourself. maybe do a trial of doing it urself and take lots of pics? And post them on here haha!

raspberrymojito: Thanks for the advice! I just feel bad getting a trial done and then not going with her. She was a really sweet girl, just not for me!
I plan on hitting up Sephora next week for an application of a different foundation with more coverage in hopes that I find the right one!

MichiganGirl24: oh don’t feel bad! Just tell her you’ve decided to do your own makeup because you think it would be less stressful for u on the day. if she’s in the wedding industry, she will understand.

raspberrymojito: I’ll have to try that when I’m there! I’m really intrigued by Makeup Forever’s HD Invisible Coverage foundation!
They have this neat little tool at Sephora that basically takes a pic of your skin and matches the color. Unfortunately, MF didn’t come up on the list of matches. The gal at Sephora used a Stilla foundation. It really was a great, light coverage foundation, just not enough to cover up some of my dark spots caused by acne.

MichiganGirl24: I was very disappointed in the MUFE HD foundation. The coverage was medium at best (more like light-medium). It didn’t last at all and looked too oily. However, I tend to prefer more medium-full coverage foundations that are more matte.
I got my makeup done professionally and regretted it. So if you’re confident doing your own makeup, I would. Are you looking for product recommendations?

I wouldn’t spend money for an MUA who didn’t make me 100% happy with my results. I am all for spending money to make me feel amazing, but if my result is just meh, then I don’t see the point.
That said, I used a MUA and still brought my own primer, foundation, concealer, setting powder, and setting spray for her to use on me. It was never an issue of her application technique. it was just that the products in her make-up kit did not work well for my skin. that happens sometimes, and I looked at all of the products i bought as an investment that i would get use from long after my wedding day.
Can you tell us a little bit more about your skin and specific needs/concerns? someone here may be able to recommend a good product for you that is sold by Sephora. And you know that they will give samples of any make-up they have, right? All you have to do is ask. Then you can take home 3-4 different ones and try one each day to see how it works and wears over 8-10 hours.

IzzyBear: I started a thread a while back for product recommendations. But, if you have any, feel free to post them here!
What kind of skin do you have? Mine is combination- oily T-zone (particularly forehead, especially in the heat/humidity of our Michigan summers), dry around my eyes and corners of my nose, and normal cheeks. I do have some large pores on my nose and some deep forehead lines that foundation tends to sink into.
I bought this primer. The girl at Sephora used it on me and it kept me oil free all day!

lovekiss: I just posted my skin type in my last reply
I think the MUA that did my trial just used the wrong products on me, like yours. I’m glad to hear that it worked out for you to buy the products and have your MUA apply them! I’m wondering if that’s what I should do.
All I know is that she used Mary Kay foundations on me over top of a Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer/BB cream kind of thing.

MichiganGirl24: MichiganGirl24: I also have dark spots caused by acne scars. I’m trying my darndest to exfoliate every other day and get rid of them. The girl at Sephora gave me some of these brightening pads to try, and so far I’m liking them!

MichiganGirl24: I have combo as well. My t-zone can get a little oily throughout the day but the rest of my skin is normal. I don’t get dry patches unless I forget to moizturize or don’t exfoliate at night. I also have fairly large pores around my nose and lines in my forehead that some foundations will emphasize. The MUFE HD just slide off my face and really didn’t look good at all. However, the MUFE Matt Velvet is great!! Try that one out. Another product I love to use is my MAC Prolongwear concealer. I use it as my undereye concealer and I also mix it with my primer (Smashbox original primer) and use it as a foundation. You could mix it with your moisturizer to get the same effect. The prolongwear concealer is very pigmented and high coverage so even by mixing it with a primer or moisturizer, you still get a great coverage. And it lasts all day long and has a great finish. I love that I essentially get 2 products in one with it. Well, actually 3 products since I also use it as a primer/base for my eyeshadow. For blushes I love the Tarte 12-hour blushes. Great colors and they last so well. Great blendability too. What kind of lipstick are you looking for? Do you have any eyeshadow palettes?

Michigain Girl- I just had a VERY similar experience. I had a make-up trial this past weekend from a woman that my hair stylist recommeneded. The make-up application was not aweful but it was not me at all, too natural looking for my big day. Strait afterwards I went to a rehursal dinner for my friends wedding and one of my bridesmades made an aweful face, she said “is that the make-up you are planning for the wedding? She did an aweful job matching your skintone, you look unhealthy” Now that bridesmaid used to work at Saphora and she decided that she is going to go ahead and do my make-up. I think that the most importatnt part of doing your make-up is making sure that you have the right products. The Makeup Forever’s HD Invisible Coverage foundation and most of their other products are really great for weddings since they are made to look good in photographs. My suggestion to you would be to call sephora and see if there are any girls there (or guys) who are well known for doing weddings, go in and have a trial and if you like it hire them, if you dont then buy the products and do it yourself. AS for the woman you didnt like, just be honest with her and tell her that you didnt really feel like it was you, or if you dont feel comfortable with that then lie to her and tell her that one of your bridesmades or your mom really wants to do it for you so that you put the blame on someone she has never met before. I am learning just like you that make-up is one of those hard things to get figured out! Good luck!

MichiganGirl24: I also have a lot of acne scarring and redness in my cheeks. The MUFE Matt Velvet and MAC Prolongwear concealer (the way I mentioned using it above) cover all my scars/redness.

IzzyBear: I’ll have to check out that MAC concealer!
I really want a matte, soft color lipstick. With a slight peach tint. Just something really natural, summery, and soft. I hardly ever wear lip color if it isn’t a tinted balm. I think more raspberry type shades look best on me, though, which is a shame because I am so drawn to the peach/corals.
As far as eyes go, I don’t have any palettes yet. I want something really natural looking. I do need to invest in a shadow primer because I get the dreaded shadow creases within minutes.
This is kind of the overall look I’m going for:
