You put it on under your foundation to make it last throughout the day longer. basically the hope is that your makeup will look like you just applied it for longer than it usually does.

I’d offer brand suggestions but unfortunately I haven’t found one I like yet!

@LWA:  It is basically a cream that preps your face for makeup, and helps it stick to your skin for longer. I use MAC Prep + Prime… I see a difference now that I use it. My makeup stays on longer, and looks more even. LOVE it. It costs about $28 and lasts about five months! Definitely worth it! Although, I would get a brush to apply it if you don’t have one already. 🙂

MAC Prep & Prime is probably the best.

If you have large pores, Benefit makes a great primer.

GOSH cosmetics (sold at Shoppers Drug Mart- not sure where you are) makes an awesome primer.

Urban Decay makes a face primer as well.

Like PP’s said, it goes under foundation. Then use concealer, followed by foundation (or vice versa- varies amongst MUA’s), and then followed by a translucent powder.

If you want to make your makeup last even longer, use a setting spray on top of your translucent powder.

Linked below are my personal favorites, and the ones I most frequently use on clients.

Hourglass (Sephora) makes an awesome face primer. Makes your foundation look flawless & it lasts all day!

I use DeSlick by Urban Decay (or All Nighter if you don’t need the oil free version). You apply it to prime before and to set after. I usually wear mostly MAC makeup, but sometimes BareEssentials or Stila.

I use monistat chafing gel (yes, as in the feminine product that helps with chafing in thighs) as my primer. I found it it works just as well as Mac Prep + Prime and its way cheaper!

Hard Candy at Wal-Mart is awesome!! Also, Palladio’s is a dupe for Smashbox.

hardy candy IS awesome but it makes me break out. i’m using revlon photo stay or whatever & its not making me break out but its not doing an awesome job on the priming part. i think i’m going back to monistat, sounds silly but it DOES work & doesnt break me out, or the bank lol.

@doily:  I also use monistat chafing gel. My friends thought I was crazy when they saw me use it, but I made them try it, and they’re converted.  Soooo much less expensive than makeup brands and just as effective!

I don’t have much experience with face primer, but I do SWEAR by Urban Decay Primer Potion, which I use for eyes only. It’s the only way I can rock eye makeup!

I usually go for a thick-ish upper liner with some tiny wing/cat eye action going. I use a gel liner (MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack) and I guess my eyelids are extra oily or something, because without the UD primer and some sort of powder shadow, the eyeliner comes off onto my eyelid no matter what. The primer is amazing! It really helps the pigments in eyeshadow to pop, too.
