For our engagement shoot in NYC I went to a Sephora for the ‘free’ makeover they give, with the agreement to buy $50 worth of product. It came out awesome, but be aware of how much you’re spending, I picked out three things and it was over $80! Yikes.
The JC Penny in our local mall has recently been completely renovated and is complete with a Sephora store right in the middle of it! I was thinking of going for another make over for my bachelorette party, but I’m curious, especially because this is in the middle of a JCP, are these ladies cosmetologists, or just girls that know their makeup?
Does anyone know how well they’re trained, what their experience is, etc? I know I can just wash it off if it doesn’t turn out well, but I’d prefer not to have to (I can’t apply my own makeup for the life of me)

I only know one girl who works at Sephora – she does makeup, but it is considered a “sales” position. She likes makeup, but didn’t receive any formal training until getting the job.
Seems like you could probably get your makeup done professionally at an actual salon for about the same price per person if you had lots of girls attending?

Do you have a MAC in your area? The MAC artists, at least in our area, all have a lot of experience (and not always just in retail) and many also dabble as freelance MUA in their spare time. You still have to buy product (I think the amount is similar to Sephora), but I think your money will go farther, in terms of quantity.

@lilbluebird: I think there are 2 MAC stores, both about 40 minutes away and in the opposite direction of where we’ll be headed for the party, I was hoping I would have as good an experience at the Sephora at JCP because it’s right down the street.
I think I may stop in and just talk to associates working one night this week.
The town I live in is pretty small and there are only a few salons, I’m not sure any of them even apply makeup but I’ll check. Even the surrounding towns are pretty sparse.
