I have knit two small love birds to create our wedding cake topper. Obviously they cannot sit directly on top of the cake, but I am clueless as to how to make a little stand for them!! Does anyone have experience or suggestions? I don’t want to permanently attach them to a stand (so I don’t want to run wire through them or glue them to anything).

If you use rubber cement or the adhesive that they use in magazines to secure samples, you can peel it off easily. The stuff they use in magazines can be re-used so you don’t even have to buy any.
You can also buy removeable glue dots.
You can secure the birds to any base that works for your decor.

As a fellow knitter I’d love to see the birds you made! You’ve just inspired me to hunt down cake toppers on ravelry!

@knittylady: the pattern I used is “love birds” on ravely – there aren’t very many little bird patterns but as luck would have it, this one was even free! 🙂 There are a few errors in the pattern, but once I figured that out they knit up BEAUTIFULLY.
Thanks for the example pics, julies….. I think I may need to make some legs for my little birds since a nest won’t really “go.” I did think about wrapping two empty thread spools with coordinating ribbon, and using some thread to secure the birds to those (which would then sit on the cake). Hmm. Will need to play around!

Legs are easy to make with heavy gauge wire wrapped in wool, thread etc.
