I’d say it’s good to start with material.  Your options for durable rings are gold, palladium, platinum, titanium, tungsten, and a few other alternative metals like cobalt.  It’s really good for him to try different styles and materials on.  My Fiancee really liked the lightness of titanium, plus it’s cheap.  Because men’s bands tend to be thicker, it’s also good to get him comfort-fit, as it will be much more comfortable for him.  Another thing to keep in mind is his hand size.  If your Fiance has large hands, he can go with a 6-7mm band, if his hands are smaller, 4-6 might look good.  My Fiance has medium sized hands, so he looked best with 5-6mm.  There are also domed and flat profiles.  Domed is more traditional, flat looks more sleed and modern.

If you have a higher budget, and he likes blue, here’s a ring I find very pretty, but still masculine.

My fiancee really likes the hammered band look and titanium, so something like this.

My husband has a black ceramic ring, and he loves it. He knew he wanted a black ring, and after looking into “black” tungsten, I didn’t like that eventually, the black coating would wear off, leaving the steel grey color (which i really like, but he insisted on black) Super inexpensive, super durable and scratch resistant. Perfect!

My fiance has an engagement ring from me.  He wanted one, and I thought it was only fair after all.  He turned out to be much picker about rings than I was, therefore he did pick out his own.

I purchased his from Titanium Kay, a site that specializes in men’s rings, so they have a big selection for picky men and all with comfort fit, which I thought was a big plus.  I don’t think he noticed or cared at the time, but I think he would have if it hadn’t been comfort fit.

The ring i got him just came in the mail today!!! He’ll have a differend wedding band but this is the ring i’ll be proposing to him sometime this month. It’s stainless steel & CZ πŸ˜€ eBay $6

* Those aren’t scratches, just reflections from the penmarks from my calendar.

It didn’t come with a box so i’m using one of my old ones and shoving it in. Wrapped it in wrapping paper, will post pics when i actually do the proposal! πŸ™‚
