I chose a local chain store called “FINKS” Its located in our mall, but its only in VA and NC.  Very good customer service!

I’d go for a private jeweler over a chain any day. A private jeweler doesn’t spend a huge portion of its profits on advertising and really cares about each individual customer. Training will by definition be higher across the board and you’ll get a better price for quality at the end of the day.

I think you should do private jeweler if you want something specific.  I think that with chain stores like Kay you only get what they have.  I’m sure that most jewelers have a warranty so don’t worry about that and if not just get the ring insured!

If you get your ring insured, then a store warranty will not be necessary.

Small jeweler. The prices at mall chain stores are out of whack with the quality.

definitely small.  NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH CHAIN STORE DIAMONDS- but small jewelers care about each client.  I am constantly calling mine, they know me and my family by first names and are wonderful.  They do maintenance on the ring for free, and any loose stones or lost stones are covered by insurance (if i ever lose one, pray not!)

Also, I believe you cannot get GIA certified diamonds at a chain jeweler, and the selection is what you get.  Also, since they are a chain, there is NO flexibility in price.  With independent, you can get it lower, and you can also pick the stone and setting separately.

a private jeweler is always good! I’ve bought stuff from chain stores, but jewelers have access to far more variety and skill. Plus if you want your ring worked on at a chain store, you typically have to ship it out. A private jeweler can work on it right there.

I would totally go to someone private. We started with larger chain stores and ended up getting so much more for our money and much better service! We had my ring custom made (copied a Cartier we loved). We went back to Cartier to look at bands and you can’t tell the difference!

My fiance said that the private jeweler’s quality was way better than the mall jeweler’s.

I should add, you can definitely get the same quality at a chain store… you just pay a lot more for it. I looked at a ring at a chain store and would have paid 25% more for the same ring I ended up with at a family-owned jewelry store… but with a much lower quality diamond. Big chains pay big advertising and franchising costs (frequently) and I don’t think they are even able to offer as good a deal as a smaller shop.

I don’t think it matters. I bought my ring from a chain store and I like that even though we moved, I don’t have to worry about taking my ring to the store I bought it from for service, as there’s a store in our new town.

Private Jeweler, and I highly recommed Platinum Jewelers in the Memphis and Nashville area. Not only can they create anything you want, they have excellent prices and customer service!
