FutureMrsHodgy:  Mamograms are not painful for the majority of women. They may be uncomfortable. but only briefly. Sceduling the mamo for the first two weeks of your cycle can reduce the discomfort if you tend to have an swelling at the end of your cycle.

Ultrasounds are not uncomfortable at all. The gel can be cold initially but it warms up pretty fast.

FutureMrsHodgy:  The younger you are the more a mammogram hurts in my experience. I believe it is because younger breasts are dense so it takes more effort to squish them between the plates for a mammogram. If you are young they will likely not do a mammogram because of this reason and jump straight to the ultrasound which gives a better picture.

The ultrasound on a breast is usually painless. I had a lump which had infiltrated the chest wall and that ultrasound was painful due to where the lump was located and having to press down on the bones of the chest. The gel is sticky but they usually do a good job of removing it afterwards and it dries so you can’t feel it either. The only scary thing about an ultrasound is looking at the screen because unless you know how to read them then everything looks lumpy! Also don’t expect many answers out of the technician because it is not their job to tell you much.

FutureMrsHodgy:  Don’t worry too much the pain is no worse than mild discomfort. And the cost benefit outweighs the discomfort.

And you are most welcome. It is scary shit that no one but those who have gone through it can understand. No matter what anyone says the fear of what if is just hanging there which is a natural feeling. Feel free to PM me anytime if you have specific questions.

FutureMrsHodgy:  i just had a mamo a few weeks ago. It was weird, but not painful. She squished my boob to about the thickness of my hand. The weird part was her trying to grab boob flesh while it was squished, to move it around. We were kind of all up in eachothers business.

The last ultrasound I had was last year. Super easy, no pain.

Good luck!

mammograms are not painful in my experience.  I felt a lot of pressure but no pain.

Tell the technician that this is your first time.  She’ll walk you thru it – no surprises.

my tech was about 4’9 – I kid you not it was like she had to lift my boob over her head onto the machine.  Too funny!

Don’t be self-conscious either.  They’ve seen it all.

I was 23 when I had both done. The ultrasound was a piece of cake! it was kind of relaxing (bahaha) the mammogram didn’t hurt. It was kind of annoying because they have to get your whole breast in there, including the part closer to your armpit. I’m a DDD. The squishing did not hurt.
