rittenhousenewbee:  I feel so old and out of it. Never heard of mani-pedis being risky during pregnancy. So no advice, but congratulations.

rittenhousenewbee:  Having a manicure or pedicure every couple of weeks will not harm your baby. Who told you this?

It’s safe, including the nail polish remover. Just don’t sit around in a windowless room sniffing the nail polish for hours on end. πŸ™‚

I couldn’t stand the smell in the first trimester, but it’s fine to go get your nails done.  There is such thing as non-actone remover if you want to do it yourself, otherwise just don’t huff it at the salon and it’s totally fine.

Nickig_4:  Did anything in my post specify acrylic nails? No. The OP said her nails are chipping. Acrylic nails don’t chip. My reply was in response to her inquiry regarding a REGULAR mani/pedi with NAIL POLISH.

Also, it would be fine to get acrylic nails as long as the room is well-ventilated and you’re not getting blasted with fumes for the hour or so you’re sitting there. But that’s completely irrelevant to the OP.

Nickig_4:  Sorry, girl. I’m so silly. I’m in my second trimester right now and I think I’ve officially gone batty, haha. Again, SORRY!!!! But yeah, I googled after you asked and there doesn’t seem to be any definitive evidence to deem acrylic nails as harmful when you’re preggers. The fumes are the only thing that could be concerning. Only because you will be more sensitive to certain smells and they can you make you nauseous or sick. They wouldn’t hurt baby. πŸ™‚

rittenhousenewbee:  Personally, I’m in my first trimester and if I wanted a mani/pedi, I’d get one. If you get there and smells or fumes are really strong or making you feel funny, you can always leave.

The only thing I’ve ever heard is that there are pressure points in the feet/ankles that can affect the uterus.  Some people claim it can cause miscarriages, but it’s highly debated and there’s no scientific evidence confirming it.  But it’s not like they could ethically do a study anyway.

For me, I would get my nails done but turn down the foot massage in the first trimester, just in case.  Most likely it would be fine but I don’t like to take unnecessary chances if there isn’t a big benefit.

This is news to me, I’ve never heard it was bad?  You’re only in the salon for an hour, I think it’s ok!  I planned on getting pedicures during the summer and I’m pregnant.

I’m going with a bunch of girlfriends this weekend for a mani/lunch date. 3 out of 7 of us are pregnant, and we’re all totally fine with going to a salon, it is perfectly safe. We did have one friend opt out of going, because she was “afraid of breathing in the fumes,”  it’s not like we’re sitting there huffing paint.. we kept telling her “People who are pregnant work at nail & hair salons & their babies are fine!” but she wouldn’t listen to us, so she’s not coming.
