- Wedding: October 2010
The Maritime is a brand new wedding venue in Jersey City, NJ that lied to my fiancee and I about the construction delays they were experiencing, leaving us no choice but to find another venue for our wedding at the last minute. They have refused to give us our deposit back as of October 2010.
Shortly before our wedding date, their kitchens were not constructed, nor were some of their bathrooms, and their second floor still was not near being complete. They left us no choice but to change venues. Repeatedly in writing and in meetings they assured us the venue would be completed – this went on for many months. And ended up not being true.
The told us that their restaurant would be open weekend of July 4th – this was a lie. As of Labor day of this year it still was not open.
They told us that no other events had to cancel there – this was a lie. They have had other events cancel there precisely because of construction delays (this cancellation is documented online).
They told us in writing they had long-booked weddings to be held there. This was also a lie. Per a member of their team the only wedding before ours was one that was hastily organized in only 3 weeks time by a member of their own construction team.
Repeated requests for specific floorplans outlining bars, tables, etc were routinely ignored (we found out later that this was because these areas were not completed).
Especially, given our wedding guest list featuring senior members of NY government, major media, and Fortune 500 brands (not to mention family) – you would think the venue CEO Mark Haskell and head chef Chris Siversen would be more accommodating.
To this day he has not returned our phone calls and they refuse to give our deposit back even though they gave us no choice but to change our wedding venue at the last minute. To this day they have not done the right thing and refuse to give us even a portion of our deposit back. Their entire team has not been truthful with us from the beginning causing us to get another venue at considerable expense to us.
Right to the end the claimed they would be 100% ready for our event but this is not the type of corporate behavior that can be tolerated so close to the most important day of your life. Needless to say dealing with them has been a horrible experience.
Would love advice if anyone else has been through this…
