My boyfriend and I are about to start ring shopping and we disagree on what cut would look best on my hand. I am about a size 6 or 6 1/4. He thinks the Marquis would flatter me the most and make my hand look longer, I like the oval shape better though. We are looking at a center stone of 2 carats. I was wondering if anyone had the same ring and diamond size that could post pictures so I could get a better idea of what looks best?

cchan2013: I’ve seen some really beautiful marquis rings lately! I think the shape is being revitalized. I would compromise and look for a l/w ratio of a marquis that is closer to an oval, or an oval that has a l/w ratio to make it skinnier. Not my ring, but this is a skinnier oval that is gorrrrrgeous!

Go try some rings on. I had no idea I would be so picky about stone shape until I did. I tried on one of everything, only liked oval and pear on my hand, and ended up going with oval.

Definteily go try on rings. That is the only way you will determine what looks best on your hand.

WhatMaeBee: Do you know what carat size or ring size is in that picture? It is a gorgeous ring!

cchan2013: Pinterest said it was a 2ct. I know both ovals and marquise face up larger!

Agree with the PPs…you need to try stuff on. I thought I wanted a cushion and ended up hating it on my finger and loving pears!
Both oval and marquise are elongated cuts and will make your fingers look longer. One thing about marquise diamonds: they face-up really large, so a 2 carat is going to look huge. Ovals face up larger than rounds, but not like the marquise shape. So $ wise, if maximizing size is an issue and you have a budget, you can get a larger-looking marquise that provides incredible finger coverage for less money. But both shapes are lovely.
Go with what you like on your finger after trying stuff on. If you haven’t already tried stuff on, you may find (like I did) that you don’t like the shape you think you want once you see it on your finger.

I agree you should try stuff on. All I knew was the type of stone I wanted, and when we went to try stuff on it was pretty obvious what type of ring was my taste, and it’s not a style I would have predicted before ring shopping (I have a Diana ring).

Hi there! I have an oval, I think it’s 1.7 ish center 2.5 tcw. My finger is 4.5, the oval gives great coverage and is very flattering!

cchan2013: Have you ever seen a moval?! They’re hybrids of the marquise and oval cuts and they are absolutely stunning!

I’d echo PP’s who are telling you to go try rings on. DH and I were recently shopping for an additional wedding set for me and I assumed I wanted an oval because of all the gorgeous ones I’ve seen lately but as soon as I tried on the oval diamond I knew it didn’t look good on my finger. I was hesitant to try on a marquise (just remember them being popular in the 90’s) but as soon as I tried one on DH and I knew it was the most flattering shape for my finger. I bet if you try them on in person (whether if it’s a smaller carat size than you want or not) you’ll know right away which one you prefer.

I also agree with PPs. Try stuff on in a local shop, even if you don’t intend to buy there. Take lots of photos.
I went in wanting a simple three stone ring, but saw a three stone halo and pretty much heard the song “This Magic Moment” when I saw it on my hand. You never know until you try different stuff on.
