Simple question and I’m apparently not searching the boards right but, do you get a marriage license for the city you live in or for the city you are getting married in? Same state, just different city. Gut is telling me city you live in but I’m not 100% sure. Does it even matter if it’s in the same state?!

This may vary from state to state. In Maryland, you obtain the mariage license in the county (or incorporated city) where the ceremony is being performed. So we lived in county x and got married in county y. Our license was issued by county y.

Depends on state law. In my state (MA), you can get the license in any city.

Ninebones: yes it matters!! I’m getting married in KY but live in NY- my marriage license for my wedding to be legal must be from KY, myself and the groom must both be present to apply for it and it only is valid for 30 days. You must look into the laws! A NY license would have been about as useful as a doily in KY.

I’m in California and did not get married in the same county that I live in. I checked with both and was able to get it where we live.

I’m a dummy. It appears I can file either place and it’s good anywhere in PA for 60 days to my understanding. Thanks again for the info’s!

I’m in california as well, and you can get it anywhere in the state as long as you use it within 60 days as I was told… you just can’t get it in one state and get married in a different state…

Ninebones: PA is pretty flexible – get a license in any county, get married in any county.

This varies by state so you need to call where you are getting married. You will get all sorts of answers on this forum…..
in NJ you can apply in the town you are getting married or the bride’s but you get the license afterward from the town you are actually married in
