At least in Massachusetts, ID is required in order to establish that you are of legal age to get married.  So they would say on the website that ID is required, but often don’t need it if you are obviously the right age.

Totally true. And in MD, only one person has to show up to get the license! So as long as you know basic information about a person, you can get a marriage license with anyone without their consent!!! Totally crazy

@AprilJo2011: Yes.  I think that’s very weird.  Did they ask for divorce decrees or ANYTHING (not that you’ve been married before, just wondering).

I’m in Maine and although the website said we would need to provide ID, we didn’t show them a thing. Come to think of it, I didn’t have to show ID when I went to pick up our official marriage certificate either.

@deetroitwhat:  Massachusetts doesn’t require that you have the divorce decress, so long as you know the date on which the divorce was final.

@AprilJo2011:  That would explain why they didn’t ask, then.  NotFroofy and I got married when I was 56 and she was 41.  They asked for ID only at the courthouse when we requested a waiver of the three-day waiting period.  The marriage license people kind of assumed we were over 18.  😉

We needed to show ID in the Philadelphia, where we got our license.  The couple in front of us was denied, because the guy did not have any form of ID with him.  (I know this, becasue he was telling us to make sure we had ID or we wouldnt be able to get a license either).  The photocopied both of our IDs for the file.

that’s so strange – you could have just given them any names!

@AprilJo2011: We ordered ours online. The only reason we went to pick it up in person was because we didn’t want to pay the shipping fees. No, I remembered wrong. We had to show ID when we picked it up. Or rather, I had to show them copies of both our DLs since I picked it up alone.

We not only had to show ID, ut we had to bring something with our names and SSN on them.  He entered a bunch of stuff in a computer.  Don’t know what he was checking up on, but we knew we had to bring the IDs and W2s so it was no biggie.

@AprilJo2011:When we got ours in Hawaii, we needed IDs and we had to swear before the court that we were who we said we were AND we had to sign a document confirming that we were us.

I’m really surprised they didn’t ask for your ID!

EDIT: We brought my passport, his birth cert and both our SS cards–can’t remember if we needed those though.
