I got married in Virginia and the certificate and the license definitely didn’t look the same. The license looked like a form. Very business like, not “pretty” like the certificate.

This is the VA certificate (found on Google) and I was told “means absolutely nothing. Just a pretty paper to be framed”. I can’t find a picture of the license though.

slinktobee:  just wanted to add. You get the certificate in addition to the license. You should have given the license to the officiant who then turns it into the court. Within a week or 2, the license will be processed and you can pick it up or have it mailed to you.

Yup.  Our marriage certificate is a certified copy of the license.  It has the raised seal and a red stamp from the county clerk.

I think it varies from state to state in terms of what information is on the certified copy(which is what you need for legal purposes). Our marriage license was the pretty, useless one, but the certified copy had to be requested through the court for 2 dollars per copy and was basically our application for our marriage license with a certified stamp and raised seal.

Get the certificate of marriage ASAP, whatever it is in your state.

In MY state it is the legal docment used for issues involving name changes, and it is the only document regarding marriage accepted for that purpose.

slinktobee:  did you pay for the one you got from the courthouse? A certified copy cost $2. If you didn’t pay for a certified copy, then you won’t be able to use it for anything like name changes, social securtity, etc.

Marriage licenses don’t vary by county. It’s by state…at least in VA.

Mine looked the same.  In fact, they took the marriage license that we signed and photocopied it onto the offical paper with the raised seal.  We got married in Maine.

slinktobee:  if you paid for it, it’s the certified copy and you’re good 🙂
